Holy smokes, what a bike

That was totally awesome. For a 99yo bike it still can boogie. That 2-banger runs right smooth for only having one rebuild since it left the factory.

Thanks for posting this, Cat. :D

Thanks Cat

Memories are made of this and old men need reminders now an then.

Great old bike. I have been lucky enough to have seen a 1917 HARLEY at a bike show a couple of years ago. Didn't get to hear it run.

Well thank you Ogg,

I have never heard of that bike but it is quite the piece of workmanship. I wouldn't mind riding one.

In its day it was called "The Rolls-Royce of Motorcycles" and Rolls-Royce didn't object because of the high quality of the Brough Superior.

The price was horrendous - about five times that of any other superbike of the time, or two or three times the cost of a family car - but no other motorcycle could be ridden hands off the handlebars at 100 mph.

Back in my younger days, I got to ride one of these. It didn't have the sidecar. Talk about a blast from the past. It belonged to a friend of mines grandfather and was in excellent shape.

I saw that and had to wipe the drool off my chin.

I loved his comment about the sex appeal about the bike.

I almost bought one from a friend in New Orleans back in the early 60's. I ended up with a 57' Norton Commander instead. It wasn't as fast or as big, only 500 cc) but it was much more reliable and easier to get parts for. I kept that bike until 1990. it was my main ride for almost 30 years. It had lots of modifications by the time I finally sold it at auction. I still had all the original parts and pieces to put it back stock so it brought a good price.

This is as close to my bike as I've been able to find. This the baby brother to mine. It is a 250cc where mine was a 500cc single. With no compression release and 11.5 to 1 compression, it was a bitch to kick over even if i did weight 200 pounds. It had a mean tendency to kick back.

Is this like it Norton Dominator? I think it was called 'Commando' in the US.

That is basically it but mine had a Weber carb and a different air cleaner setup. It also had a different set of pipes and mufflers. I think the pipes were from a Norton Atlas. As was the carb. A lot of the Atlas parts fit the motor and trans.

Over the years i added a springer front end with more height and rake. A shorty front fender. I laced the Norton rear center section into a Harley tire and rim. I ended up spacing the rear swing arms out father to accommodate the wider tire and rim. Then the shocks didn't line up and kept breaking the mount so I ended up hard tailing it with rubber bump stops.

It was interesting to say the least. I wish I still had pictures of it but they have been lost in all the moving around.

When I sold it, I found that the model i had was very rare. It was specially made for the US market.
