Two months into term found Jules Aronack sitting in the Ravenclaw common room on a cold, grey afternoon, reading a book by the fire. He had finished his potions homework for tomorrow and fancied taking a small break for his brain to rest. He was a seventh year at Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry and seventh year ment graduation would be here soon. He was so bogged down with course work for his N.E.W.T level classes that this was the first break he had had since the first of October.

As the fire crackled and his fellow students came and went, he finished his chapter. He folded the thick corner of the book down to secure his place when he started reading again and stood up to stretch. He wasn't the only one reading today. In the back corner was a girl that he knew was in his year, but he had never talked to. He figured that now was as good as time as any. He pulled his robes about him to cut the chill abit as he walked off from the crackling fire. He roughly a foot from her when he looked down at her and said, "hey, whatcha' reading?"

Sera was reading through a lovely book on Alchemy in the back as she always did. It was one of those cloudy days that were perfect for curling up with a good book. There was a bit of a chill in the air, but she dare not move closer to the fire. People came and went, but she barely realized it. She figured that if the room was empty by the time she finished her next chapter she'd move a bit closer and warm herself up a bit, but she was nearing a good part.

"hey, whatcha' reading?"

Sera looked up from her book with a startled look of near shock. She'd thought the room was empty. No one ever came up to talk to her besides Em and Keira and she was thrown off a bit.

"I... It's.. It's a book on ancient Alchemy.."

It was someone she'd seen before. He was on the house quidditch team. He often kept to himself, but she never thought much of it. She unconciously averted her eyes from his. Odds are he'd leave as soon as he lost interest and realized how dull she was. Just like everyone else... It was what most of the popular students had done when she was in her first years here. Around third year people stopped coming up to her altogether. She had no idea that it was because somewhere along the line she'd blossomed into a beautiful young woman, and most guys were petrified to come near her..

"Ohh ancient alchemy. That sounds interesting. I was never much of a fan of alchemy. I do have quite the fondness for potions though." He watched her as her eyes averted down and away. He knew she was quiet and he had only seen her outside of classes a few times. She was never at the quidditch celebrations after the team won and he had seen her once at Hogsmeade. He took his book and opened it and let the pages rifle from front to back as he sighed abit.

"Are you a practicing alchemist or is this just for shits and giggles," he asked as he leaned to his right and against one of the rounded walls of the tower that housed the common room.

"Well..I believe you need to have papers before becoming a practicing Alchemist, but I've only touched the surface on it in theory.. Just something to pass the time I guess.."

She looked directly at him. Her soft gray eyes seemed to sparkle against the fire light. She shivered a bit.

"You're on the quidditch team right? How's the season looking this year?"

"Well we have only had a few practices but it looks like we will be in pretty descent form when we have our first match," he said. "Do you like quidditch? I don't think I have ever seen you at the parties we had last year when we started winning." He looked down at her from his post against the wall with a slightly raised eyebrow. His hazel eyes fell across her face and made their way to her eyes.

"Do you like quidditch? I don't think I have ever seen you at the parties we had last year when we started winning."

She put the marking ribbon on the page of the thick dusty book and thought to herself..

"Well I don't dislike it, if that's what you mean. Em and Keira usually drag me to the matches. They make me leave my books behind. It's actually kind of fun. I've seen you out there. You're pretty good.. The parties tend to be rather social and I.. well.. You're the first person to talk to me in awhile.. Well besides my friends.. You have a lot of nerve don't you?" she said with a smile.

"Not nerve really. You just happened to be in here when I got up to loosen my back from that chair. I looked around and there you were. The book you were reading didn't look like it was all too fun and it didn't look anything from class, so I was intrigued," he said with a smile. "I think that's why I got into Ravenclaw. My mind is always making me do things that might get me into trouble but I am so damn curious," he said as he slid down the wall and landed on the cold stone floor with a soft thud. A small cloud of dust lept up from the floor when he did so, making him sneeze slightly. He scrunched his nose up slightly as he said, "bless me."

She smiled.

"Yes Bless you.. It gets kinda cold on days like this.. I might as well grab a blanket from my room.."

she said closing her book.

"You should get yourself a jacket or something. You might catch a cold."

"A blanket? You could always come over and sit by the fire. Ohohohh nice warm fire," he said with abit of a giggle as he looked at her with a big smile on his face.

Why hand't anyone ever talked to this girl? She was funny and intelligent and she had beautiful eyes that he couldn't stop looking into for some reason. He reached down and pushed himself up from the floor and dusted his bum off and nodded toward the couch. "Comming with?"

She laughed a bit from his comment as she watched him get of the the floor and gestured towards the couch.

"Comming with?"

She thought for a moment then put down her book.

"heh..Oh..Why not?"

She got up and sat on the couch near the fire. She felt the temperature increase immediately and she soon felt the warmth all over.

"You're right this is rather nice...Aren't you going to sit down?"

"Yeah, I am," he said as he sat in the chair that he had been in before he had ventured over to talk to her. "So how are your classes going? I thought O.W.L level Herbology was rough but N.E.W.T level is about to rip my mind to shreads," he said as he sank into the chair and looked over at her.

It was amazing what fire could do. It could destroy lives but it could also make you see someone in a compleatly different light. The fire reflected off of her at all the right angles and he began to smile rather broadly in response to what his eyes saw.

"Yeah, I am," he said as he sat in the chair that he had been in before he had ventured over to talk to her. "So how are your classes going? I thought O.W.L level Herbology was rough but N.E.W.T level is about to rip my mind to shreads,"

"Oh I'm surviving.. It's all a matter of knowing how to write the papers. It's usually the sheer volume of the work that gets me now and then. I usually get most of it done between breaks.. Ancient Runes is interesting some of the time, but although students never mention it, the higher levels are rather boring.. It's honestly like an endurance test more than anything.. I mean just because I'm good at it doesn't make it fun.. I actually like Defence against the Dark arts and Transmutation alot better. They are lots more fun.."

She smiled watching him look at her.

"Are you alright? You have that look on your face.. You know.. The one a person gets when their mind is drifting.."

"What? Oh,.. yeah THAT look. I've just got lots on my mind," he said as he danced away from the subjectly quickly. "I know what you mean about it being the volume of the work. Sometimes I feel like I am barely keeping my head above the water. But, Divination is fun and lets me goof off alot. I probably won't pass my N.E.W.T in there but I will in all the other classes that matter," he said as he straightened himself in the chair and looked at her for one second longer before he tore himself away from her and to the fire.

He turned his head away.

"I could help you know.. I pass that class like it's nothing.. Trelawny thinks I'm some kind of seer or something.. The key is to state the nearly obvious.. Like saying a guy sneezing in the corner is going to come down with a bad cold. It's all about connecting the dots.. Oh and be sure to add in a stiff yet dramatic tone.. He's going to come down with a horrid illness.. The trick is not laughing.."

She decided to relax and slouched a bit in her seat letting out a bit of a sigh..

"Oh don't get me wrong. I am wonderful at the class. But I doubt that the Ministry will give me the N.E.W.T," he said as he began to relax in his chair again. His head began to turn again until it found her and his pale hazel eyes settled in on her.

"So, I have seen you maybe a hand full of times since 1st year. Why so quiet.. I mean I don't even know your name," he said with abit of a disgruntled look on his face.

It was then she really looked at him. Em and Keira often had a list of guys they said were the most attractive around 4th year. It was a funny thing they always did and giggled over. He'd been in the top 10 more than once and she was starting to see why.

"So, I have seen you maybe a hand full of times since 1st year. Why so quiet.. I mean I don't even know your name," he said with abit of a disgruntled look on his face.

She smiled big as she felt her face get a bit hot. Was he? Nah he couldn't be checking her out..

"Seraphina.... Seraphina Roslind Grimsby.. and it wasn't always my choice to be silent you know. I wasn't as social in grade school and I tended to seem rather boring around my first few years here.. People lost interest in me, everyone accept Keira and Em. I met them on the train.. I don't know what they see in me, but we always have fun together.. They always help me recharge. I basically have the policy that I won't speak unless someone is interested enough in me to speak first, but seeing as I'm quite enjoying our conversation, I may just have to change it.."

she said smiling even more than before. She was practically beaming now.

"Everyone should flood in here pretty soon.. Supper time isn't too long from now if I'm not mistaken.."

"That is such a pretty name. It's so much better than mine. Jules Bellum Aronack," he said with a sigh. He wished his dad wouldn't have wanted to pass his name along to his only son but Jules had learned to live with it. "And don't feel bad about folks not talking to you. I think the American accent scares people away here. Most people don't know any American wizards and it throws them. Problem is that it has thrown them for seven years now," he said as he sighed abit and looked at the floor breifly.

He looked back up quickly though, catching her eyes and smiling. "Yeah you are right, dinner is soon."

"Is is really all that obvious? I honestly thought I was losing my accent.. I've been living with my Aunt in london during summer vacations. You're name isn't all that bad you know.. It's actually kind of.."

People began pouring into the common room, dropping books and loosening ties. It was the beginning of the dinner time ritual. People would come with a roar of voices and laughter, then file out.

"There you are Seri! We've been lookin' for ye everywhere.." said Keira with a concerned look.

"Yeah we wondered if you fell asleep in the library again.." said Emmie with a soft sigh.

They quickly took notice of the Jules beside her.

"We-ll now who's this?" said Keira.

"Looks like numba three.." said emmie with a grin.

Sera's eyes widen as her cheeks turned red in embarrassment..

"I..I.. We were just having a discussion.."

"Riiight,"said Keira with a playful smile.

"I meant my accent. I wouldn't have known that you were from American had you not told me" he tried to tell her as the volume in the common room increased ten fold in a matter of minutes.

He saw the two girls talking to her and concluded they were the friends that she talked about. Then came the shocking information. "What do you two mean? Number three? What do they mean," he said as he addressed his question to her this time. He looked back and forth between the pair like a dog waiting to see who was gonna toss it its snack.

"Well I'm not really a.. Number three? I honestly have no idea what they.."

Seri looked rather embarrassed and uneasy..

"Excuse us.." said Keira pulling Seri into a huddled area.

"you guys I.." she started

"Seri.. Do you have any idea who that is?"

"Jules Aronack?"

"Yes Jules Aronack.. Don't ye remember? Emmie and I elevated him to third rank on the list last term. Ye sly dog.."

"Huh? You guys I really don't.."

"He usually keeps to himself.. How in the world did you get him to talk to you?"

"Look you guys, usually I'd love to chat but umm.. I feel I'm being terribly rude to him.. I'll talk to you guys later.."

"But.. But.. you have to give us something to work with.. Aww.. "

Seri quickly walked back over to the couch finding the seat occupied..

"Jules, I apologize for my friends.. They get a bit wacky now and then...As for the numba three thing.. It's just a little game they play.. They pick out 100 boys that most girls deem attractive and do a random poll to rank them. Apparently they feel you are high ranking material.." she said with a hint of a blush.

A smile broke out across his face as he blushed and looked away. "That's nice," he said as he giggled slightly. "So I am pretty high up on the list huh? That makes me feel special. I really didn't think that anyone ever thought about me like that, honestly. I mean I have seen your friends watching me every now and then. I figured I had a booger or something hanging from my nose or that my ties wasn't on straight. Hmm.. number three," he said again as he smiled and looked her in the eyes.

She felt a heat travel to her pale face as she saw him look at her with those soft hazel eyes of his. What was this feeling all of a sudden? Why was she getting nervous? It made no sense..

"I well.. I really don't know who's on the list these days.. I mean it's not like I place a great importance on looking at it.. It's what they do inbetween boyfriends.. Emmy's had 3 and Keira.. Oh I've lost count.."

Everyone began to file out of the commons and towards the great hall..

"Well seems like it's time.. I had a nice time talking with you.."

She said feeling a bit awkward.

"I'll...just be going then.." she said before turning toward the door.

She sighed. He probably wouldn't want to have dinner with her.. Why would he? They'd only just started talking and who knew what kind of reputation he might have to uphold. Talking to the strange girl who never talked might not go over too well. Either way she'd be able to tell Keira and Em all about it.. She wanted to look back and ask him, but was it proper for to ask him? Her mind was an absolute jumble as she finally found her way to the door.

He hand't even noticed that she was gone until one of his teammates slaped him on the back "Come on ye great thick lump. Dinner time mate and we need our strength for practice tomorrow."

Jules was startled to see her gone and he looked to the doorway and saw her leaving. He lept up and ran after her. "Seraphina" he whispered after he had fought his way to the crowd. "You wanna sit with me at dinner? I mean I understand if you don't but.. well I don't think we had enough time to talk," he said, his voice a tad bit shaky.

Had he really said that? She quickly turned to look at him..

"I...That..would be great.." she said with a smile.

She moved towards him.

"I mean if you'll have my company.."

"I wouldn't ask for it if I didn't want it now would I," he questioned teasingly as they pushed through the throngs of people making their way down to the Great Hall all at once.

He leaned his head in so he could talk to her without yelling. "So are you ready for Christmas brea? It's only about a month away," he asked trying to make conversastion. He continued to step closer to her as he did so though. He was nearly right up against her back now. He didn't notice it but his hand was grazing against her bum slightly.
