As I've said before. everything is bought, the presents are packed, food is stored, drinks (unopened!) are stacked...

Now what do I do?

I'm beginning to miss those last minute frantic dashes to the shops...

Ho hum...

:)

You're stockpiling stuff?

Wait for the big bang, by the sounds of it.

Stockpiling for two days :)

We have Boxing Day as a holiday as well, the day after Christmas.

And I've got 8 people staying...

Boxing Day?

Do your guests get to box your ears?

:D

More like "whup me baby...whup me!!!" :D

There are two stories as to why Boxing Day is called that...

One is that the day after Christmas is always a big sporting day over here and a couple of hundred years ago boxing was the most popular spectator sport...

And the other more modern story is that Boxing Day is the day you throw out all the cartons etc the presents were wrapped in.

I usually go for the first reason...it's got historical culture behind it...

"Whup me bab..." oh sorry I forget it's not time yet...

I have heard that Boxing Day has a different origin...
It is called Boxing Day because you shag Boxer dogs... no, wait, that's only in New Zealand...

... it's because in the past you put all sorts of clothes and food into boxes to give to the lesser fortunate. You box up your superfluous goods and give them away, because you've just been so fortunate the day before.

That's what I grew up with (Mum's English). A quick search on the net produced these results:

-In England the day after Christmas is called Boxing Day because boys used to go round collecting money in clay boxes. When the boxes were full, they broke them open.

-Boxing Day is so called because on this day it was the customary for tradesmen to collect their Christmas boxes or gifts in return for good service throughout the year. Also, it included giving money and other gifts to charitable institutions, and the needy.

-The holiday may date from as early as the Middle Ages, but the exact origin is not known. It may have begun with the Lords and Ladies of England, who gave there Christmas boxes/gifts to their servants on December 26, or maybe by priests, who opened the church's alms (charity boxes), and distributed the contents to the poor and needy.

-December 26th (the feast day of Saint Stephen) is called "Boxing Day" because it is customary to bring "Stephen's Boxes" of food to the poor like Saint Stephen did.

Very humanitarian. No wonder it never caught on in the States...;) :p
