Who do you think was the most evil and ruthless dictator of the 20th century?

hitler and stalin are about tied for evil, but in different ways. mao, however, was more ruthless.

Besides the obvious reasons, I'd say Hitler was the cleverest one, therefore the most evil.
IMO, Hitler had enough charisma and brains to seduce his ownpeople into accepting his ideology.
Whereas the other two - although I understand that they committed genocide, too (goulag etc.), they only managed to do that through terror (people ratting on each other out of fear & survival instinct), and not through partial acceptance by their own people.

(but I might be wrong, tho, given that my knowledge re history is quite limitted)

I think you're right, Mao has the highest body count, between 60-80 million according to some estimates.

Most of whom starved to death.

Where the fuck is Pol Pot and the American Abortionists?

PP most likely murdered a higher proportion of his countrymen.

Hitler and Stalin got together and started the worst war in history, besides all their countrymen they killed.

ETA: But, maybe it should be the Prophet Mohammed. The series of conflicts he started is still going on, and includes more people than all the others combined.

Hitler's charisma and oratorical power, while considerable, have been vastly overstated by most in analyzing his rise to power. His accomplishments were less the result of seduction than they were of essentially stealing the German government by manipulating the consequences of pressures from the Versailles Treaty ending World War I, the Great Depression and the political stalemate affected by coalition governments involving the German Communist Party, Catholic Centre Party, Socialist Democratic Party and the Nazis.

An aging, out-of-touch President Von Hindenburg also played into Hitler's hands as he attempted to juggle an increasingly impossible political situation.

Once Hitler solidified his hold on power after the Enabling Act of 1933, it is probably impossible to accurately assess how much of his popularity among rank and file Germans was heartfelt and how much was the result of the good, common sense to "smile, salute or else."

Of course, after 1939 when your country is conquering all of Europe, it's pretty hard not to believe you are on the winning side. That alone tends to win hearts and minds.

Hitler's oratory was powerful and effective. You wont find an unkind word in any of it before 1933. Its all about how wonderful Germans and Germany are, and how both deserve the best and will flourish when theyre free. Trump has the same style.

Whats lost are France's constant aggressions against Germany before 1940, Poland's aggression against its neighbors, and Jewish influence in Germany. German Jews were 1% of the population yet controlled 40% and more of the wealth, government, arts, education, and professional jobs. Most were Russian communists.

In 1933 Roosevelt sent word to the German Jews to chill out and back off from aggravating Hitler. The papers were fulla Jewish declarations of war against Germany. Hitler, at the time, was allied with Jewish efforts to take Palestine from Britain to create a Jewish state.

Fuck Stalin, kill Hitler, marry Mao.

Wait, what was the question?

That's not inconsistent with anything I last posted. In fact, Hitler's propaganda machine was but one element in HOW he stole the government.

Don't leave Pol Pot off of your list. Limits of a small nation shouldn't be cause for discrimination when considering homicidal and genocidal dictatorial ranking.

Hitlers political machine landed his ass in jail. Then for years after he was released his "charisma" continued to fail as his party couldn't win shit. A crap economy and a weak leader allowed him to slide in. Even then his " charisma" was a product of a great speech writer.

Pol killed about 1/3 of his people. So yep, I will go with that.

which also supports my/others views:
That the North-Western Eu countries invented PR, PCnness and advertising. Which helped and helps them do better than other equally talented nations.
