Hippy Heavens

Turn on Cartoon Network and watch Scooby Doo đź‘ đź‘ đź‘ Kant or you could hang out with the counter culture freaks in Atlanta, Ga.đź’‹

What if you were too young to be a beatnik and too old to be a hippy?

I see that Madrid, NM is on the list. That's where David Bowie arrived in "The Man Who Fell to Earth."

I had some old friends who lived off the grid on a back road outside of town and ran a jewelry shop/gallery in town. They've since moved into Santa Fe due to the tolls of advancing age. Being an old hippy ain't easy.

Being an old anything ain't easy.

We tell our kids, "Getting old ain't for sissies."

And we aren't all that old -- yet.
It sure ain't what it was cracked up to be! And we are all that old. We've seen some good and bad shit, But we were too poor to see all of the shit.
Still we learned about sex at the drive in movies, did it in a hippy van, saw what real tittie bars were, checked out glory holes, biker bars, bought cars on Sundays and so far we've survived.
There were no hippy's or beatniks that we knew of in the corn-bible belt and we graduated in the class of 57, living our dreams.
We were all gay, drank coke, and had no idea we were supposed to be racist.

I came across a photograph the other day – probably taken in about ’65. Gosh, we all looked happy.

The two other guys in the photograph are now long since gone. And I can’t remember who any of the young ladies were. But they were certainly pretty. If I had known that I would live this long, I would have taken more notes. :)

Back then we were all happy. We didn't have Trump, Hillary, or the rest of the gang..

If ya'al want naked stop in at "the cove" Lake of Ozarks or one of many of Florida's nice RV parks near Tampex.

Thanks to my scribbled notes I have our varied true life stories no one believes.

The OP's page has a link to a 10 HIPPIEST TOWNS list. I've more-or-less lived in some of those -- the cheaper ones out West. They're certainly more interesting than other places. Bisbee and Jerome AZ are pretty amazing. We'll be doing some cross-country touring soon and every town on those lists will be worth visiting, maybe staying for some time. Groovy.

Santa Fe, NM is one of my favorite towns in the USA. And it has its share of "hippie" culture too,

Very high cost of living, though :(

Hippie Hollow. 50 years of nudity. The only legal nude public park in Texas.

It's been about five years since my last visit. Maybe next summer.

That's still on my list of places to go.

Been to Blacks Beach in CA, Gunnison Beach in NJ, and have been a regular at Baker Beach in CA. And for my all-time fave "happy place" - see my screen name :) (Haven't been there for 2 years, though :()

It will never happen (for various reasons) but I'd love to live in one of the upscale clothing-optional neighborhoods in Pascoe County, just north of Tampa.

Santa Fe is a lot about money.

The Taos area was a hippy mecca at one time. A few years ago (okay, maybe 20 years ago) we were hired by a surgeon in Taos to represent parties in a dispute over an acequia at Llama, a little north of Taos.

I visited the area and was surprised to find out that the people we represented were the remnants of an old hippy commune; most were the children of the original hippies. Having been raised without much outside contact -- by people with alternative lifestyles to start with -- the residents were barely socialized, uneducated, impoverished, and generally unable to cope with many challenges.

The doctor who was our formal client and his son were two of a few people who supported and protected the community. The community itself seemed to consist mostly of a few tepees scattered in meadows beside small plots of amaranth. It was a place where a bear claw might be someone's most valued possession--and one of very few possessions.

I was disturbed and surprised at how quickly a society could devolve.

Great thread! Like stepping into a time machine...if only we could! Haight-Ashbury...the summer of love...an entire culture that no one writes about in history books. I'll be dreaming of psychedelic flowers and black lights tonight. Peace.
