Since so many Canadians have taken a keen interest in American affairs, I thought I'd return the favor.

Published by The Truth Commission into Genocide in Canada, a public investigative body continuing the work of previous Tribunals into native residential schools, including the United Nations-affiliated IHRAAM Tribunal of June 12-14, 1998, convened in Vancouver, Canada.

More than 50,000 Indian children died in these facilities between 1891 and 1984, according to government statistics which indicate a continual death rate of between 35% and 60% in these schools.

I just can't see how this can be from the Moral Beacon to the North.

*gasp*

June 12-14, 1998: The first independent Tribunal into Canadian residential schools is convened in Vancouver by IHRAAM (International Human Rights Association of American Minorities), an affiliate of the United Nations. Evidence is submitted by dozens of aboriginal witnesses to crimes against humanity. The Tribunal concludes that the government of Canada and the Catholic, United and Anglican churches are guilty of complicity in Genocide, and recommends to the United Nations that a War Crimes investigation be held.

Discuss.

It isn't hidden...as a matter of fact, that episode in history along with the callous treatment of Japanese people during the War is taught to all Canadian children in school.

There are some people who are idiots all over the world...every country...every city...every neighbourhood.

That's not the half of it....they used to shoot Beothuk Indians (now extinct) for sport in Newfoundland.

It's all true and then some. Disgraceful shit.

You're correct. The reality is some win most lose. It's been that way since the start of time and record.

Yes, I understand how ignorant any society can be.

The American incarceration of Japanese American's was out of prejudice and fear. That ended in 1945.

These events against Native Americans are too recent for "we were bad, we're sorry".

The Canadian government in collaboration with different churches systematically destroyed the identity of a race of people as recent as 1984.

Some forms of "punishment" were molestation and disfigurement.

The leading cause of death for Innu males under the age of 20 in Canada is...the shotgun.

In A Gas Sniffing Mood?

Canadian Press
October 13, 1998
DAVIS INLET, Nfld. (CP) - Police and native leaders were meeting Tuesday after a weekend of tension and mayhem in this tiny Labrador community.

A 10-hour armed standoff Friday night left one man injured. Police then spent much of the next two days dealing with a flurry of gas sniffing and alcohol-related incidents. RCMP Insp. Bernie House said police were constantly challenged by teens high on gasoline and booze. One Mountie was struck in the shoulder Saturday by a rock thrown from a slingshot when he and other RCMP officers responded to a disturbance at a home in the community. About 30 teens then gathered around the officers and started throwing rocks at them.

DAVIS INLET, Nfld. (CP) - Dozens of gas-sniffing
youths are again roaming the squalid streets of Davis
Inlet. Their sudden return to this northern Labrador
community suggests a year's worth of high-profile
treatment programs has failed.

"There's dozens and dozens (sniffing gas)," said one
resident of the island community, which is home to
about 600 Innu. "It's worse than it was before. ... A
bunch came back and got the others into the
gas-sniffing mood after Christmas." Simeon Tshakapesh,
the community's outspoken Innu chief, said federal
health officials are to blame because they haven't
approved funding for a community treatment centre.

It's a shame how the youths are displacing their anger. No Catholic priest to "love and nurture" them.

That is like the evilest thing I have ever read. Holocaust evil.

Keep in mind that Canadian Chief of First Nations, Matthew Coon Come, doesn't use the word "genocide", nor does the UN.

Uh...but they have said "extinction".

Extinction isn't a crime, genocide is.

Precisely. The source you used is a guy with a Hotmail address.

Nobody else...not even the Assembly of First Nations...has said "genocide".

No genocide...no holocaust.

But a grim part of Canadian history.

of course they don't call it genocide. people don't call what the US did to native americans a genocide either, but that doesn't mean it wasn't.

But what really gets me is that the Church is involved. By this point, I shouldn't be surprised when I hear one more evil thing that the Catholic Church has done (in Spain, they stole babies from poor women during Franco's time and gave them to rich women), but it still saddens me and angers me when an institution that is supposed to be doing good is once more revealed to have sunk to the lowest depths of human depravity.

Yes, and this was before, during and after the incarceration of the Jews in Poland and the Japanese in America.

America were the only ones not to kill their prisoners.

Weren't you saying you had a "credible agency" to cite?

Here's the Canadian Assembly of First Nations website...where it's viewed as "Residential School Issues"
