Today is diwali in my area...

For you xenophobic Americans diwali is an asian festival...

Right the question is, and I'll be very surprised, if any American isolationist...

...can tell me what diwali means, what it celebrates, and why you should be very worried about it...

Tis the first Sunday of the month; Mr Keen gets his haircut at the place there at the market like clockwork. I think he just has a crush on the wee scottish lass who does it. I usually just spend time cruising the market and then we go for a curry. Might start some holiday shopping there though tomorrow. I love how I see shit there and then like a couple of months later it's the 'new hip trendy' look in all the girlie fashion mags and selling for many times the price in Miss Selfridge. Heh.

It's a hindu thing, you moron.

Diwali is actually a fucked slur of the sanskrit "deepavali" Deepa means light vali means row.

It's a festival of lights meant to highlight the need to get rid of ignorance with the light of knowledge. The Goddess, oh what the hell was her name. Lakishmi I think is the Goddess generally welcomed in or a part of the ceremony.

Well, you got me stumped.

Why should Americans be concerned about Diwali?

So the kids who make Nike have a day off?

Peeps, America is the most multicultural nation on this big blue marble.

Most other nations on earth are defined by ethnicity (see all your beloved nations of Europe). Until just a couple of years ago, you couldn't be a German citizen unless you were an ethnic German. America isn't and has never been like that. An American isn't defined by blood but by the act of assenting to values set forth in the Declaration and the Constitution.

You may now return to your drunken ramblings...
