This is more of a delurk than anything else. My first story went up a few days ago which I guess makes me an author, and since I'll be scavenging these forums for advice and ideas, I thought it would be good to introduce myself.

I don't really have much of a clue about what I'm doing at the moment, but I've always thought that if you want to be good at something, you have to get past being bad at it. I like reading the stories on here, and I like to tell stories, so I thought I'd try to add something to the pot. My first attempt seems to have been well enough received, but there was no sex in that. I'm interested, in a terrified sort of way, in how the second installment works.

One thing I have noticed, as an aside, is the way that even though characters are figments of my imagination, they're remarkably independent. Almost to the point of being uncooperative. You think "Let's have Jane buy a new set of waterproofs, and before you know it she's walked into a dojo to resume her Kendo training, which she abandoned when her ex confessed it intimidated him. I'm kind of assuming this isn't just me. Even if it is, I guess I have to deal with it.

One question I have is regarding the huge discrepancy between views and votes. If a story has a thousand views and five votes, does this mean that a thousand people have read it to the end, or does a view count if someone never makes it to the bottom of page one? And on a related note I've noticed the score on my one submission so far has changed slightly a couple of times even though the number of votes hasn't. Obviously I'm losing lots of sleep over this - can anyone satisfy my curiosity?

Someone in another post suggested adding a link to stories we'd written. This post isn't really about a particular story, but here's the link anyway in case anyone's curiosity is piqued. Fair warning though - Your five minutes is non-refundable :)

Anyway. First posts are always the hardest, and my preferred tactic has always been to jump in and wing it. This one is no exception.

Welcome to the madhouse.

Ah yes, uncooperative characters. They are the bane and boon of every story. It's like herding ducks or cats. You just have to keep trying.

A view is someone or something clicking on your story whether they finish it or not. Until you get a following expect about 1 vote per hundred. Also expect sweeps ever so often that will drop votes that the site considers suspicious. Don't ask what that is because it is a secret to keep people from making go arounds. The only score, vote, and view totals that are close to up to date are the ones on your user page.

I hope this helps your serious worries and remember, your gas mileage may vary.

Author of Dr. Fegg's Encyclopedia of All World Knowledge, by any chance?

Yep, that happens to me. "Hey, instead of sex, let's talk about cellos for a couple of pages." It usually means the characterisation is working; IME, even if it derails the plot from where you intended it to go, it'll probably end up somewhere that's just as good.

Welcome, have fun :)

Thanks - that makes sense :)

Actually something else I've wondered about. If I edit a story that's in the "pending" queue, does that then drop it to the back of the queue, or is its position unchanged? I'm imagining the former, since it would encourage people [me] to proofread more carefully, but I can't help wondering.

I'm rather embarrassed to admit that I thought the reference would be nicely obscure - Well spotted :)

As we all know, there is no better way of keeping the brain young and agile than thinking about sex. So you can expect to find a lot of very agile brains on this forum...

;)

Yes editing or anytime you push the submit button again, even by accident, sends the story to the end of the line.

I didn't vote on a single story for the first 10 years I read on this site. I figured a neon sign would appear above my computer flashing SHE'S READING PORN! SHE'S READING PORN!

And then I turned 40 and I didn't care anymore.

Good luck!

Heyla Bert

Welcome to the Cuckoo's Nest.

Yup, it's difficult coming out of lurkerdom any time. But, I think you made a helluva better start than I did a couple years ago. And for the most part these extremely opinionated virtuosos of the written word are good people aside from a tendency of a few to practice their soap opera acting across various threads. Just do what I do and pop some popcorn for the show when you see it happening.

As for characters taking on a life of their own, I know exactly what you mean. My submitted VDay story "In Love with Love" was supposed to be a story about a guy who gave flowers to a young woman he didn't know on VDay and gradually transition into a November-May romance. Instead, the next thing I knew that young woman turns out to be an ancient goddess (or demoness) of love and seduction. And then her paramour who happens to be the Roman god of War makes an appearance. None of which I am in any way smart enough to think of on my own, so I blame it completely on them.

I gave up trying to twist that one back, submitted it, and started working on another one. This time it's turning into a revenge story. I've tried restarting the damn thing four times and yet keep ending up back at a small cabin five miles out of town with the two hottest looking (and hottest tempered) young women in town washing the mud they had just wrestled in off them while the male first person narrator stares out the window at a building blizzard.

And all I wanted was a simple tale of a nice guy who has finished last his whole life giving flowers to a plain but pretty young lady he didn't know on VDay.

Ah, well. What are you gonna do? Maybe if I finish this one, I can actually write the one I want to write.

I'm probably wrong, but I've been pondering the same questions you asked regarding the views and votes and such as well. The conclusion I've come to is that when a story is opened, it is attributed as "viewed". Since the vote and comment screen is on the last page, it can only be voted and commented on by going there. The longer a story is, the less likely someone who actually reads it will get through to the end in a single sitting. Also, if someone really likes it, they may read over it again, but can't (or don't) vote and comment again.

And then, as patientlee pointed out, a lot of people assume a scarlet "P" will become emblazoned in the air above their monitor if they vote and comment.

So, how does it feel to know that you are the guilty pleasure that your admirer can't admit to their family and friends?

Yeah, I wish I had known about that sign in advance. I got a shock the first time it came on...

Thanks for your replies, not to mention the reading material. and thanks especially to those of you who've offered words of encouragement.

Here's hoping everyone who reads this has a damn fine week ahead of them :)

That's an impossible question to answer - My wrongness scale isn't calibrated that far.

At a guess I'd say better to be caught by your mother, because [a] Your kids will be around longer, and your mother knows it will be you picking her rest home.

The kids don't know what sex is, because they're not allowed to have it until they're 40 - at least. So that would be mom ;)

Bwah hah ha.

Oh, you were serious...

Yeah, let me correct your misperception. My granddaughter stumbled across one of my stories. The little shit critiqued it.

(Hell, no she doesn't know I wrote it. The fact that I know is bad enough.)

Knowing that your Mom knows about sex is not that big a deal. After all, you got here somehow. Knowing that your daughter (or worse granddaughter) knows enough about sex to call you out on unrealities in a sex related story.

I'll let my granddaughter critique my erotica in about a decade, no sooner. Maybe I'll be dead by then.

My daughter participated in NaNo with me for the past couple of years and has posted on the AH with me as well. *shrug* I don't find it a big deal at all.

When I told my 10 y/o daughter about the birds and the bees, she asked if you "do this" when you want to have a baby, how did we get the 5 y/o? (because he was a surprise). I told her it was a "recreational activity." When she said, "You and dad don't do that anymore, right?" I said, "Well, it's kinda fun."

My daughter is a bit older. She's 36. Her brother turned 40 a few weeks ago. ;)
