The problem is a lot of these things are just plain common sense. If someone isn't writing with said common sense, they're not going to care about rules or constructive criticism either.

Some of those tips seem really obtuse, too. Do people really exist that don't understand the purpose of quotation marks? I also can't say I've ever seen people use curly brackets or slashes as quotation replacements...

This thread was made because in the years I have been on Literotica, the ratio of coherent writers is increasingly dwindling to just a few. In all honesty, the majority of us older writers have been writing with the same partners over and over ( and this includes group threads as well).

All I'm saying is that it would be a refreshing change to write with somebody new that isn't terrible at spelling, can write more than a few sentences and doesn't mind giving some story with their smut.

If you don't like the way someone writes, don't read it. Most of us have free will and some of us even have our own opinions about what is good and what is not. I bet the writer that I just quoted was "new" at something once upon a time. What about all those misspellings and *gasp where is the grammar and punctuation???

I know that I was new once, and still am, but I don't need back-patting nor do I need to put someone else down in order to elevate my perception of my own self-worth (or lack of). There are some wonderful writers on this forum and most of them go unnoticed because they fly under the popularity radar.

The paddle spanks both ways. Someone else might not like the way you write or what you write either.

I see where you're coming from, but I think you're missing the point. The opening post (despite sounding a tad elitist) is attempting to encourage people to write coherently. Not conform to some sort of abstract storytelling ruleset. I don't necessarily agree with everything it says (If someone wants to write Darth Vader into Middle-Earth, who cares?) but if you're going to be attempting to write along with other English speaking people, like this forum is for, then you should have a grasp of the fundamentals of the language.

If someone is writing their own story by themselves and want to forego the standards by abandoning punctuation and spelling then that's their call. This is a collaborative effort, however.

My god that paragraph was painful...my 17 year old sister who's flunking English and curses more than...anything or anyone I know can't write that badly.

Okay well I openly admit that my early postings here on Lit were rocky at the very least but not misspelt to an insane extent. I would just like some writers to take the time out and reread what they're going to post. I mean it's not final; the edit button is readily available at anytime!

Personally I have not yet been told that my writing makes people want to kill themselves with dictionaries...not saying it won't happen but seriously...if you write with some else; at least do them the courtesy of a proofread beforehand!

I do it for my co writers even though I rarely find a mistake so why shouldn't I expect the same level of respect in return?

Oh and Maid? I actually really like your writing so props to you! I love reading other people's threads as much as my own - subscribed to over 30 and climbing currently.

Some people actually like him. Some like him because it's popular to like him. Me? He makes my eyes bleed.

One person's perception of what makes a good writer is (quite often) very different than someone else's.

Don't be so quick to write us older rp'ers as "assholes" as you are trying to imply. We do go out of our way to provide newer role players insight! Most of what I wrote was intended to be tongue-in-cheek, so I'm sorry if it seemed like I was being antagonistic. I threw the smily faces in there in an attempt to communicate that, but reading over my post again I can see how I still might've come off as a bit hostile. I was not trying to imply that you were/would be publically humiliating anyone, I just meant that PMs are a better way to go about this than the public flaming that you often see on other forum sites (and depending on their sensitivity to criticism, people can have different ideas of what constitutes 'flaming').

As for your concern that I might brand Lit veterans "assholes," that is definitely not the case. I may not post much, but I subscribe to several story threads that I read regularly, and I communicate a lot in PMs. I would never make such a broad, sweeping generalization about any group of people, anyway. 'Asshole' is a label that should be applied only on a case-by-case basis.

And the adverb comment was actually a little jab at myself, since I'm probably one of the worst offenders out there.

I'm actually glad that someone had the courage and took initiative to start this little "help" thread. I've also noticed that there are more and more new writers recently, most of them going out and posting their little hearts out.

I have no problem whatsoever with a writer who works to improve him/herself. However, the multitude of good, new writers is rapidly diminishing. I haven't been posting for long, but I have read many threads. I follow along the ones that are good. But the ones that have one-liners usually cause me to grind me teeth.

I'm not bashing anyone, but I believe that we are here to have fun. And what's the fun of writing with a person who only gives you a tenth of the effort you put into the thread?

I got that list off the Official Writer's Association on DA.. so they are a bit more.. anal. I completely agree with you on writing about Vader, or Middle Earth, since this is an SRP and a lot of stories on here are either extracted from copy written stories and what-not. Sorry; if I could, I would of written on the file "Ignore a few of these!" But I figured, writing out an explanation for that would not only be confusing to newbies, but all-around a general pain. I figured people were smart enough to ignore that rule, lol.

I don't. The only reason why I picked quotes from actual rp threads was to prove my point. That's all. Normally I wouldn't be caught dead reading newbie rp's- even if they were interesting to me.

I'm not trying to tell anyone "how to write" nor is this a popularity contest. Sure, some writers get more recognition than others. Do you know why? It's because they take time in pleasing their writing partners. They go out of their way to make sure that their fellow writers are having fun and are willing to hear others ideas and thoughts on continuing plot. Not to mention; they are willing to see you beyond the general RP story. They outstretch their hand and offer to be a friend as well.

These are the people you see as "popular". Trust me, you think that I don't know that there's tons of wonderful writer's out there who are simply just shy and are not sure how to talk to more, noticeable writers? I do. And I am more than willing to write with them, just as long as they can keep up with me!

Look. I get that there's some writers who prefer doing the two-sentence method for quicker, "straight to the point" posts; and that's fine. But nobody should have to suffer through terrible spelling and mushedtogetherwords. Unfortunately, minimal sentences just don't do it for me and some other writers on here. I personally prefer giving the readers a long, juicy post. I'm a pleaser.

That's good that you don't need your back "patted". I wasn't trying to, nor was I for anyone else. I was just expressing a view. Last time I checked, we were allowed to do that on a public forum. Or did I miss that memo?

If someone doesn't like the way I write, then who cares? I certainly don't. If you don't like my posts in here, then why read? Looks to me like you are contradicting your own reply.

I have a horrific tenancy of reading everything as a negative jab. I'm a mean person, so really; I should be apologizing to you.

But I still have to disagree on the PM vs. Open Forum Post. I feel that this way reaches far more than a single post to (up to five)a person/ people can.

Frankly if you write with a newbie then you truly are taking a chance as far as I'm concerned but they do need to start somewhere. I'm just very tired of being disappointed when I take a chance. I can't write with something who refuses to put in the same amount of effort I put into a post or at least a very close level of it.

I can accept an off day or two and while writing pure porn can be fun, I get really bored of it really quickly. - WHEN ADVERBS ATTACK

No offense newbies but some of you make my eyes bleed and my dad is sick of calling paramedics who find me crashed on my keyboard with - I dontwanna diedded 2dae! Written on the screen...

Oh and I wasn't the greatest when I joined here but I was a fast learner, Lords and Ladies was my first thread and just by looking at the first page you can see how quickly I got better just by reading and getting tips from co writers. I still desire to improve and expand my vocabulary but there's a huge difference between actually trying and just typing whatever!

This is a totally disjointed possibly pointless post so now everyone can suffer the Minx and be happy about it!

I know as a reader its terribly frustrating to see one side of the partnership putting in the hard yards and contributing detailed posts to then have the other player simply post a one or two sentence reply. It quickly turns me off reading the story so I suspect that the one putting in all the effort very quickly gets turned off and stops posting.

I have always lurked on these forums as I love to read a good story however the time has come for me to start posting and I will attempt to see if I am able to adhere to the 10 rules of posting etiquette. So hopefully I will be up to the challenge, when it comes time to post in an SRP with one of the great writers that frequent Literotica.

We should soooo do a list of those posting etiquette rules though - specific to the SRP boards, totally mad idea.

Rule 1 should definitely be - Accurate spelling and grammar - proofread!
