That was one of the more disturbing things I've ever seen... ugh.

I have never understood the piercing fascination, ever. I had a pierced ear when I played football, but that was a team-spirit thing--we all did it (we also shaved our heads, so we all looked like pirates, it was ridiculus). But... piercing everything that can support metal weight... I don't get it.

I understand individuality. All praise the God of Individuality and the being and individual and the great hard-on for doing what we like... but, ugh.

The problem is that it isn't really individuality. It's fitting into a subclique of "rebels". The problem is they're (for the most part) not real rebels. They're the guys made fun of by Dead Kennedys on "Anarchy for Sale" and Anthrax on "Packaged Rebellion". Furthermore, I've got nothing against tattoos. Most look decent though they do tend to stretch and fade over time and piercings are piercings.

Also, though they try and "shock" me, they really don't. I don't feel "ewww" seeing them. I just see someone trying too hard to not fit in.

My intention was to ammuse, not offend. If you are offended, I offer my appologies, or you can flame away, I have thick skin.

I've got two tattoos and I'm not trying to shock anyone, be a rebel or stake a claim to individuality.

I just like 'em.

Each one says something about me and both are in places that can be seen in a bathing suit, but are otherwise hidden from public view.

Does this mean I can't be a rebel? Even if it would only be a pseudo-rebel? :(

p.s. Vella, if your tatts ever need licked, I volunteer. :p

Sorry let me clarify. Tattoos gotten because you like them or say something or you were drunk or whatever are nothing. They're just another cool decoration like one's clothes, jewlery or hats. I have no problem with them and often appreciate them (don't have any of my own yet, but who knows).

However, getting "extreme" tatts for the sole reason of being a "rebel" and "shocking" people is what I refer to as an example of "Packaged Rebellion". It shows no real individuality.

That you got tatts that reveal clues about yourself is a form of individuality, something I support heavily. It's done for personal reasons and thus shows more rebellion against conformity than overdoing it for show. I don't know if I'm making any sense here, but I hope so. There is a thin line between individuality and just another form of conformity.

Damn, L_C... you are one cynical mufucker. : )

Hmmm.... :D yeah, probably. Still got a little romanticism buried somewere and one day I'll go out there with a shovel and find the damn thing.

As far as my comment, I don't see it as much as a cynical comment as a comment against this "society-okayed" rebellion. I know real rebels and non-conformists. You can see many of them in the AH.

Furthermore I knew people who did pick styles to reflect their non-conformity. fedora, hawaiian shirt, and a kilt. Can't get much more non-conformist than that, especially with his staunch support of nihilism and anarchy. Crazy mutha, but a true individual non-conformist.

I, personally, never understood the mentality.

I mean, I'm a polo shirt kinda guy. Baseball caps are nice. I like khakis. Maybe I'm a conformist, dunno. But I'd rather have Dockers on than stick a pencil-thick metal stud through my cheek.

You make plenty of sense, as usual. I suppose I agree with the extreme versions of body decor. I will say that getting a tattoo of something you believe in, or something that says something about you are quite addicting.

I guess I prefer to look at it from a different perspective. I don't necessarily think people that are over the top in their self-expression are in desperate need of deviating from the norm. I've known many people that simply felt that it was a good way to express something about themselves (and/or their artistic side) and simply don't give a damn what others think. It wasn't motivated by shock value or any deep-seated need for individuality.

*shrugs*

Regret is a real possibility and for some a huge probability, but I figure that's their problem. I appreciate most all body art and am truly intrigued by the stories behind each item. There are always extremists and in those cases I would agree that the trend becomes a cult behavior and is directed at some misguided quest for individuality and what not. Otherwise, it's all in good fun and their mistake to make.

So, Lucifer, what's your first tatt going to be?

I'm an artist, so appreciate the beauty of some of the tattoo designs, yet on the skin...

I'm only a tattoo fan for the drawings, not the actual skin dyed imprint.

My two bobs. ;-)

I have two tatts and often play with the idea of getting more, but I will wait until I have an idea for one I really love.

As to our friends above, whatever trips your triggers. I just hope that no one goes into that level of modification on a whim.

I think it was Vella who mentioned about surgery and unexpected changes to a tat. Yep, happened to Dave (buddy of mine hurt in a May 19th cycle wreck). Instead of one shamrock over his middle back he now has two off-center halves...
