How is the new job going? Are you enjoying it? Is it what you expected?

I'm dashing off for the weekend soon, so if I don't respond promptly, it's because I'm off and away. Hope it went well for you.

Well, I guess the best way to describe how things are going is "so far, so good". The job isn't the best job for me and my qualifications, but it isn't the worst either. Right now, the important thing is that I have a job, I get paid well, and I don't hate what I do, although I don't like it as much as other jobs I have done. That should/could change after a while, but I can't go into details about why or how; I want to keep from being inadvertantly identified by someone putting two and two together.

What I am hoping is that at least this job will last until the economy starts to turn around in 1-2 years, and maybe at best it would last significantly longer. If I can remain employed until the economy turns around and people start being hired again, especially people like me, then I can maybe progress on in my career to a better position. Don't get me wrong, I like who I work with, and the important thing is that I have a job writing code - but the kind of work I am doing right now doesn't further my career any place except where I am currently working. Like I said, that will change eventually, but even it won't further my career as much as a job working on different tech would. I am going to try to ameliorate that downside by continuing my self-education in the kind of tech that would move along my career.

I can't complain though; I am writing code instead of testing, I am getting paid, I work with good people, I've got a good office - but mostly I've got a job! That is a lot more than a lot of people can say, and it takes away 99% of the pressure and stress. Plus, eventually, if I feel the need to move on, or see things are going downhill financially at the company - it is a lot easier to get a job when you are already employed.

Woohooo! I'm happy for you H. It doesn't sound half bad.
There really isn't anything bad about the job, but there is the one aspect of the tech I am working on being outdated and not contributing to my career. But I don't try to think too far ahead anymore - my main concern for some time has not been furthering my career, but rather resuming it.
