... as opposed to surviving
This is Day One of my six-week break, and for the first time in months I feel totally free. I have no deadlines, no timetable, no schedule - just an expanse of time at my hands to relax and enjoy all the little things I haven't been able to appreciate for so long that it was starting to make me feel ill.
So here's to getting up whenever I feel ready to.
Here's to eating when I feel hungry, as opposed to waiting for an allocated lunch hour.
Here's to morning walks along the coast and having the time to notice things like the scent of the flowers, the warmth of the breeze against my face, the ocean views, the butterflies, the vole scrabbling into the bushes and the faint buzz of aeroplanes.
Here's to the mindless little distractions, like watching the cut scene in the Enter the Matrix video game, where Niobe kisses Persephone.
Here's to having my dog come up for an early morning cuddle while I'm reading in bed.
Here's to window shopping, as opposed to necessity buying.
Here's to not having my performance judged every working day.
Here's to not being stuck around people when I'd prefer to be on my own.
I could go on for a very long time, but I'd probably be delirious by the time I got to the end of the list.
Why do we put so much pressure on each other? Little things like tailgating the person in front if they're going to slow, expecting a service provided by humans to be superhumanly perfect. Nothing ever seems good enough in our society. We might achieve something really fantastic at work, but the next week there's always a self-evaluation / self-improvement form to be filled in, and our next target is set before we've had the chance to enjoy fulfilling the first.
Feel free to add to the list
