Eden Gabriel stood there in what was left of a once great chapel in her homeland. The international assembly of soldiers had turned it into a communications and briefing post. Her arms were crossed as she listened to the complaints of the monks from the outlaying areas about all the blood and death and how it was not good and surely there was some other way. She was calm with them but when one of the soldiers who seemed to know or at least understood part of what they were saying tried to step in her eyes turned to venom and her demeanor seemed to turn ruthless and cold. Some of the soldiers in the room would leave some had strange looks in their eyes and others just seemed suddenly more terrified of this civilian woman than the war raging all around them. She was there on her own but ended up as a translator when she was asked to be one by the villagers who call her family.

Miss Gabriel...

The American soldiers have returned and appear to have found some of the nomads you had informed us about and have brought them here to safety.

She turned back to the priests and asked them to tend to the nomads before turning to walk out of the chapel growling at the massive Italian Corporal who attempted to follow as an unwanted bodyguard.

So Americans... what all did you find?

Her tone always seemed to bristle the team commander yet he also didn't seem to want to gain an internal enemy so he simply nodded to one of his men to deal with her. Her arms crossed as she waited for an answer. Her eyes revealing nothing as she looked this American over waiting for him to talk.

“You sure this is a good idea?” Alex asked taking one last drag out of his cigar and glancing over at his commanding officer, the shades were drawn down low preventing the harsh glare

“Its not a idea it’s a order captain” The general said stubbing his own cigar out and turning to look at Alex Tiberius Stone “orders are order captain this civilian asset of ours is a real spitfire and I want you to deal with her for us”

“Why me Sir?” Alex asked raising an eyebrow and getting up “aren’t there better people trained for this kind of thing?” Alex asked straightening his uniform. He tried to keep his disdain for the job out of his face, he was about six months into his final tour of duty and it was going well. He was a simple grunt in charge of the base security and for the most part he was out of any of the danger zones. So why did he have to be a liaison to some spoiled civilian?

“Because you’re patient” The General said smiling softly “You’re the only soldier who could deal with some one with that much fire and plus its only for six more months which matches up with your own leave date now here our the coordinates your meeting her at” The General said handing him the paperwork and turning to his computer.

“That will be all son”

An hour later

Alex guided the car to a stop and got out, the chapel was partially bombed out but it still had a sort of strange beauty to it. He ignored the monks glaring at the soldiers in obvious disdain and rolled his eyes, they were always annoyed at the soldiers who were doing their job and even though Alex was once sympathetic to them after so many tours over seas his patience had officially worn thin.

He saw the woman arguing with the commander and waved him down, giving him a nod to leave. The man shot him a grateful look and he all but ran out leaving Alex to deal with the so called terrible woman.

“Hey!” Alex said walking over to the woman and gesturing for the soldier to get out “Ma’am my name is Alex Stone and I will be the new commander and liaison to your little group

So then you are the one who can get these other American soldiers to inform me what all they were out there guiding the nomads here to safety. I will NOT see any more ancient sites destroyed because some politician and some general rules have gotten their petty little feelings hurt.

She looked him over a brow raised. Another changing of the guard as it were Westerners seem to change commanders alot out here. She brushed her hair back a little out of her eyes awaiting his answer or their answers. She was born from these lands even though she had not grown up here still that look of belonging and being almost spiritually attuned to the area was there even if she was a tad dominant in her approach to matters in an intense contrast to the peaceful beliefs and ways of this place.

“Ma’am we aren’t destroying any more ancient sites” Alex said crossing his arms and refusing to move a budge “You and your people have identified all the sacred sites and our men are keeping them safe you can relax we have taken every thing into consideration that you have told us” Alex said, the woman was beautiful and fiery but the General was right to say that she had a bit of a temper.

See that they don't and make sure no one else does either.

She turned sharp no thank you no nothing her steps leading her away from him like a lioness. She made her way over to the fire the monks were seated around tending to meal time for everyone and she sat down speaking to them in the native tongue. They seemed to be trying to calm her and ask her things to distract her. One of her aids walked over to him.

This place and all the hell it has gone through and been allowed to be put through is a bit of a rough spot for her mentally. You'll get used to her or she'll just get used to you being here and relax a little. Though with you being a soldier I think it will be you just getting used to her. Eden is a bit intense about protecting whats left of this area. Her family is from here.

“I’m sure she is” Alex murmured watching her go back to her own people, he turned and thanked the aid that came to talk to him and moved out of the building. He had man to take care of and didn’t have the time to deal with a spoiled brat like her, he would keep his distance from her and he was sure she would do the same with him and as long as nothing happened they wouldn’t have any thing to worry about.

“Okay people” he said stepping outside “I want a full operations report in five minutes it should be time for a guard rotation so get it done relax and do what you want to do but keep it professional for the civilians” He said nodding at them all before turning and entering the cathedral again.

She had calmed some and was sitting back drinking a mug of tea from the monks. They were milling around getting the nomads that arrived settled and fed. Kids playing over in a corner and a minor medical set up in the other end. She looked over nodding but still there was that fire and edge of maybe command to her as she went back to watching over them.

Near nightfall a perimeter guard started radioing for a translator and a medic immediately. She was one of the first out of the temple headed to the guard that called in. She and a few others outside of the soldiers had radios. She got out the the northern edge and saw the guard kneeling by the little boy trying his best to explain he could not understand him and help was coming.

After spending a few hours getting every thing that needed to be done done, Alex tiredly sat in a chair and unstrapped his helmet. The change of command had been sudden and rushed which meant he had a lot of paper work he had to clear before his night would be over. He began to close his eyes and sneak in a quick nap before his radio went off breaking his seconds of rest and alerting him to a commotion going on outside. He got up and grabbed his pistol keeping it ready as he walked outside and saw the little boy.

“Get back!” Alex snapped to the guards “let the translator and the medic do all the work” he said nodding at the two to continue and turning to go back inside.

She sat talking to the boy as the medic looked him over. Luckily the blood was not all his own. She had to keep getting him to sit still for the uniformed medic to make sure he was okay. Once the boy was tended to and resting in the care of the monks she walked back into the temple and talking with some local resistance guards she was armed and turning to leave the camp with them. In her mind clearly the American's and other outsider soldiers had missed or had not cared to make sure all the invading soldiers were dealt with in the area so now she was going to have to do it.

Umm...Sir... the translator and the local soldiers just took off armed for bear. The kid said something about soldiers and we thought we had gotten all the nomad families back here sir... what do we do? Orders from the top say we need her so now what?

“And please tell me why she has guns in the first place?” Alex said pinching the bridge of his nose and getting out of his seat “I want this situation handled now!” Alex snapped at them grabbing his riffle and walking out with the other soldiers. The soldiers at the main gate hadn’t been dumb enough to let her out (thank god) and Alex saw she was with the local resistance. Why they still had their godamn guns was any ones guess but Alex resolved to a put a stop to it right here and right now.

“Put your guns down on the ground!” Alex snapped bringing his riffle up and aiming at the resistance, the other soldiers followed his lead aiming their guns at the group trying to leave “I don’t know why you still have your guns but I want you to drop them right now you can’t just leave whenever you want and go play soldier”

American the local resistance are on our side. Geez they didn't tell you anything. Guys weapons down we have to fill the new CO of the American troops in. Sir if it comes to local natives and he nomads that pass through here she is the lead. Time is wasting the kid mentioned soldiers are was wearing his own and other blood.

She simply stared him dead in the eyes with no fear at all just that quiet cold command.

I do not have time for this there is clearly a problem we WILL go and deal with now.

“It’s a problem for the soldiers and the resistance soldiers” Alex said keeping his gun pointed up and ignoring the man talking to him “The resistance members are free to go as well as our soldier but she is not” Alex said pointing with his gun at the girl “she is a translator she is not a soldier the resistance soldiers I can understand but she is not allowed to leave”

“So either put down your weapon or no one leaves” Alex said gesturing at her “It’s your choice but if you want those enemy forces taken care of then you back down and let trained troops deal with it”

They need someone who is not in uniform to trust while the outsider soldiers and the resistance deal with whoever has attacked them so either we get going and you can accompany me if you really feel that I require it or you can BACK OFF and let me do my job and we can discuss this when we get back.

With that she turned and began walking along with the resistance troops and some others slowly moving with her while determining if the new american was a threat to her or not.

“Why I’d love to” Alex murmured turning to some of his men and nodding at them “Lead the way” He said doing all that he could to resist calling her princess, he moved forward with her and gestured for his soldiers to open the gate letting them out of the compound. He walked with them holding his gun and adjusting his helmet as he stomped forward with the soldiers.

Damn the General! He was annoyed and his supposed “legendary” patience was already thinning as he spent more and more time with the woman. She was infuriating as she was beautiful and Alex could already feel himself mentally counting the days until his tour would be over.

The boy led them quickly to the little rise near his camp. He pointed to the other side of the camp where the soldiers were taking great fun is shooting from distance at the harmless nomads. Then he pointed out how he got out of camp to go get them. A path leading through rock "tunnels" from rock slides and tall nearly dead looking shrubs.

Her temper flared as she motioned to the resistance troops about circling around she was going to follow the boy into camp to check out the damage and prevent any more if she could. She looked to the American soldiers and informed them of the same thing.

I would greatly appreciate you all helping them take some ranking commander from those monsters alive they could prove useful for information to make this venture into this region a little more of a win for our side.

“Okay let’s do this” Alex said pulling his gun and walking over to her “I told you I wasn’t going to let you go” He said raising his eye brow “now if you don’t mind I’d like to get this over with he said gesturing for her to walk with him to the tunnels before turning to his soldiers.

“You heard her” Alex said nodding at his soldiers “Go ahead and take one of the commanders” he said before walking with her.

She followed the boy into the little rock slide tunnel and then through the brush and into the back of a tent in the camp. The little boy guided them over to the old man who led the camp. His grandfather and explained to him they brought back soldiers to take care of the evil men in the cliffs. The old man nodded but not fully trusting uniformed people in their camp he placed Eden "safely" on the other side of him he had plenty of reason to since this other army invaded their homeland.

She motioned to Alex to relax a little as she sat down talking to the old man for a moment before looking to Alex.

These soldiers have been here for a while... they have taken two of his granddaughters... killed his son and wiped out most of their meager herd. He does not trust soldiers at all he means no disrespect and knows that you are not one of the invading soldiers but he is the leader and can never be too careful. They did not have any food to give them so now they have been shooting into the camp like this since he told them to find their own food.

“I understand” Alex said nodding at the villagers before turning to his soldiers “how about we leave them enough food to feed themselves and then we defend them when the other soldiers come” he said as simple as possible and waited until his soldiers moved to follow his orders before turning back to Eden.

“Is that okay?” he asked politely looking at her “will that appease the villagers”

She turned back talking to the elder and nodded a few times then smiled as she looked to Alex.

They will accept the gift and some will wish to aid you in protecting the others. I told him that might not be acceptable but I would ask. Some of the young men he said are eager to fight because they are tired of being victims they grow tired of the peaceful ways of the elders.

She sighed looking around noting the vast age difference guessing the young men who the elder talked about could not be older than 12 if that. She would not agree to it at all they were far too young to learn about killing and combat.

“As long as there not underage” Alex said following her gaze and shaking his head “not only is it against my orders but I would never allow children to be in combat they are far to young and innocent and it shames me as a human to know in some parts of the world they have already become soldiers” he said taking out a shaky breath and turning to her.

“Thank you” Alex told her trying to be as nice as possible, like it or not they were forced to be together and he would have to be as patient as possible with her “you did excellent work and this went a lot more smoothly because of you I owe you a drink when we get back” he said smiling just a little.

She turned back to the old man and asked to go speak with the ones who wanted to fight and he seemed to nod in agreement.

I have an idea to make them think its not a good idea. They will NOT be able to hold the rifle your Lt right there has... let him help me show them they are not strong enough yet and that they would be better help here in camp.

She glanced to the Lt who seemed ready to help discourage the young men from picking up a weapon.

“Sure” Alex said shrugging and turning to his Lt who stepped forward eagerly “go ahead and do that while I make sure our transportation is secure”

“Yes sir” he said nodding and attending to the children, Alex left and when he came back fifteen minutes later all of the kids looked sad but unable to fight. Alex nodded at his Lt thanking him under his breath as he ruffled some of the kid’s hairs and walked back up to Eden.

“So did every thing go smoothly?” Alex asked raising an eyebrow and leaning against one of the cars “are we ready to leave”

It worked that's all we needed. Lets go find the cowards shooting into this camp and end them.

She seemed different away from the nomads... Colder... more... almost commanding.

Lets go

“No way” Alex said shaking his head and pulling her behind a car and away from every body else in sight “I can’t let you go I’m sorry but if some thing happened to you not only would it feel bad but I would be in so much trouble”

He sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose “you are a civilian liaison” he explained “and if you do some thing with combat and I let you then I will be breaking a thousand rules you can not go”

Then you had better be ready to shoot me to stop me Soldier. This is my homeland and I am going to protect them is that clear?

With that she turned and began walking away towards the undergrowth and the shadows.
