Anyone have any experience with getting such a tatoo?

I think I have read that historically these have been done to celebrate such things as weddings and births. I had this idea that I might have one done for a pic of my own pregnancy. Can I do this myself at home (ok maybe with help of some friends) or this a job best left to profesionals?

Thank you much.

had them done in Mexico on vac
they use india ink and they last about 2 weeks..I would say professional unless you are a neat artist.

You can buy Henna kits on the web, and in some off the wall bookstores. They come with ink, patterns that you can apply directly to the skin and brushes to use them on. Might also come with some oil to remove the tat, I dont quite remember what mine came with. Was alot of fun to play with, and had some really neat ideas.

I think Henna would be a great way to experiment if your trying to decide to get a real tat.

Get them done by a pro. I did the at-home kit in college once and the results were disappointing.

Use a pro....

For something as special as what you are describing use a Pro. The at home kits are O.K, But for a large area they can get tedious. Good Henna work is usually India Ink and will last two-three weeks.:)

I'd agree with str.

I currently have a henna tat on my ankle...I'm deciding if I want it permanent.

Also, what I didn't know going in the first time is that whatever you're getting tatooed needs to be left exposed for at least an hour for the dye to set. An hour is the minimum, but the longer the better...it sets a deeper stain.

The ink dries to a crust and then can be rubbed or picked off after that first hour

They're not that expensive around where I live in Boston

Hey, ty everyone for your replies. I think I am going to look into a professional artist if it's not too much money.:)

I know I'm a bit late on this one but i think its more meaningful when you have someone close to you do the design. The day i was due with my daughter my doula drew with henna on my stomach and feet. That was actually the second time when I was pregant (the first was at a hafla). I still henna, normally on myself. Of course being in Montana at the time, there isn't much in the way of options. If you can find a freind that would be willing to apply it for you there are also numerous patterns to use in home kits.
