pbs started the new ken burns 'hemingway' series tonight.

does ken burns EVER have anything bad to say about anyone? they totally whitewashed his separation from hadley, made her a peripheral character. hemingway, by anyone's measure, was a total son of a bitch...but not according to ken burns.

i get it. he did something revolutionary with prose. he's still a son of a bitch.

So far, they didn't shy away from pointing out he lied about how he got wounded in WWI and then included it in public talks, they've been open by how much of a sexual cad he was (including a hint at gay activity and how his mother dressed him like a girl), they let him be direct about his mother being a bitch, and they let him get sanctimonious about his father committing suicide out of cowardice--exactly what he did himself. They didn't avoid showing how self-centered he was or the hatchet job he did on a friend in a novel. I'm watching. I'm not seeing a whitewash.

LATER: As I was finishing this post, the second part of the documentary was beginning, and I had to laugh, because it started by reviewing Hemingway's monumental lying, moved on to wondering what his need was to kill things, and then moved into revealing how phony his self-perpetuating myth of himself was. The unpeeling of him continued there to the end of two hours. After it finished, part 2 of 3, I was wondering if the OP and I were watching two entirely different programs.

I'll probably get around to watching it, even though I come away from most Burns projects in disbelief that he ever leaves anything out.

Hemingway was fine, though like most famous writers, what he wrote prior to becoming a celebrity beats the hell out of what he wrote as a celebrity.

And, no, Burns hasn't produced all of PBS's documentaries or even most of them. They go to him because he does great work and shows a good profit. It seems you are the one hooked up on his skin color, not me--or PBS.
