help!

my toilet has been "running" for like 40 minutes, i can't make it stop. usually i just jiggle the handle and it eventually stops but that hasn't worked. what should i do? anyone know?

take the top off the tank and look inside. There is a little rubber edged stopper that blocks the hole where the water flows into the bowl. make sure that is sitting correctly to block the water from leaking through.

in addition to the above...
see if the chain is still attached to the lever. If the "arm" is broken you'll have to replace it. It's very easy to do, and not expensive.

and in addition to THAT..

sometimes the chain just comes undone from the arm...if that's the case, then all you have to do is reattach the chain.

Wow, we got a buncha world class plumbers here...good advice, all.

If you do all the stuff that was mentioned above and it's still running then you need a new shutoff valve for the tank. That's the plastic tube thingy that the float ball is attached to. They cost about $10 at the hardware store and take about 20 minutes to replace. Pretty easy.

2 you proly will understand this way better

take the top off
make sure the black thing at the bottome is shut
see if there is too much string or wire (whatever hooks the black part to the handle)
this sometimes gets stuck underneath

there is a white pipe that runs up and has a jiant hollow ball hanging from it. this ball should float on the top of the water as it rises, and where it meets the tube water should be comeing out of it. sometimes the ball is too tightly screwed on and won't go up all the way shutting off the water.
also could be other way around if it's too loosely screwed on the ball can move side to side as well as up and down so if it moves sideways the water won't stop.

don't worry the back of the toilet cannot overflow there is something that drains it if the water gets too hight (this is why it sounds likee it's running it's actualy draining)

And...

If the sound is driving you nuts, just reach around the side of the toilet and twist the little handle on the pipe attatched to both the toilet and the wall.

Right tighty, lefty loosey. (You're going tighty)

And that about sums up my toilet knowledge.

check the plastick screws in it first lexie, you may not need to buy a whole new peice just screw or unscrew a bit.

and if ou shut off the vaulve like wiggles said don't do it all the way or you can't flush.
