I'm not sure if this would be here or if I'd need an editor, so please let me know if I should redirect and I'll do so. But, I just wrote up a poem (a remix of Poe's "The Raven" into erotica) and I can't figure out which tags to add other than Halloween 2025 because I might as well put it in the contest. I'm just...entirely at a loss. Usually I can think of a few tags to add as signposts but the story told in this poem doesn't seem to fit any one thing. Is there a way to get help with this sort of thing before posting? Again, if that's the editors forum or somewhere in the story feedback forum, I'll go here. Just thought I'd start here since the Author's Hangout is where I've been most comfortable.

Thanks y'all!

Go to the category of your choice. On the right side of the screen, lower down, you can see the most popular tags for it. It should give you some ideas.

Thing is, I'm not even sure which category I'd put this in if it wasn't already going into poetry. Heck, I'm not even sure if it technically counts as "erotic" though it includes enough that I called it erotic.

Actually, now that I'm doing even more digging, I can't even find the popular tags section for poetry. Is it really that unpopular?

Oh God, I hate tagging things. I always feel so lost and overwhelmed.

But something that does sometimes help, is trying to summarize it, and going through and picking out key points and concepts.

Sorry for the misdirection; it seems that poetry doesn't have that section.

What are some of the concepts in your poem? Can you key on those?

You could use "remix", "Poe" and "the Raven" as tags so people who come across your poem would, should they reveiw the tags first, as least know the direction you are heading.

I have many ideas about tagging, but I'm not sure if they apply to poems. The audience for poetry at this site is very small, so I don't know if tags make much difference. The readership for poems is, I think, the small readership that reads poems, rather than readers looking for kinks generally. But, that being the case, I would say:

1. Figure out what the most compelling and central kinks are in your poem.
2. Use tags that highlight those kinks. Be direct and obvious. Don't be coy.
3. Use fun, titillating words in your tags when you can. For example, if I wrote a story or poem in which a bikini plays a major part, I would always use "bikini" as a tag.
4. Use your full allotment of 10 tags.
5. You might consider using a tag that describes the type of poem it is. If it's a sonnet, use "sonnet" as a tag. Etc. Poetry readers can be very picky about the types of poems they read.
6. Try to imagine who is going to want to read or like your poem. Then think to yourself, "What would they search for to find my poem?" Try to use tags to guide probable readers to your poem.
7. If the similarity to The Raven is obvious enough, you might want to use "The Raven" and/or "Edgar Allen Poe" as tags.

I do have those in my description ("An erotic remix of Poe's "The Raven" is how I described it).

As far as the poem: the general idea is the main character who laments that all the costumes are "sexy" is given one by a shopkeeper that is of a "maiden" and told of a later "fee" that will be collected before running off to the Halloween Party she's late to. At the party there's an unexpected orgy of sorts and she finds the shopkeeper giving a bit of a show with someone in one of those more slutty costumes (the "whore"). The fee is collected in the form of keeping her there forever as his maiden (though a tormented one) locked behind closed doors. There's some reluctance in that she tries to run away, but ultimately nothing is done until she consents and it's pointed out that should she wish to leave, a door will appear whenever she chooses, so she's not exactly reluctant either?

So like, if I put maiden or virgin, it lies because the whore is there and sex is clearly described with her. But if I put whore, well, the POV character is the maiden and the whore is "discarded" once the maiden shows up. If I put orgy it's not quite right because there isn't a lot of focus on the group sex (though it is mentioned). In the end, there's teasing/edging, but it's only the last few of the 18 stanzas that make up the poem (matching the form of The Raven). I even considered recording it as an audio for the contest, but I won't have time to record where there aren't listening young ears before the deadline (my fault for only coming up with the idea so late).

Ooh, you could still do the audio, later. Wouldn't be in time for the contest, but it still sounds like a pleasant listen.

My responses to dirk cover much of what you said - I think the trouble is I end up with some competing kinks. I hadn't thought to directly tag Poe or The Raven, but the title and the first stanza make it very obvious I've taken advantage of The Raven being in public domain.

Thank you for all of the ideas, though. I was able to add a few tags (e.g., narrative because it's a narrative poem) using the advice as well!

Are you allowed to submit audio of an already submitted/published story?! Like, one that wasn't originally put in scripts?

Pretty much every piece of advice I would have given you was already covered by @SimonDoom and his enumeration fetish.

The one additional thing I'll suggest is that it's fine to add something wacky if your story, or poem in this case, is sufficiently focused that you're having trouble coming up with a full ten options. These would be things that no one would ever be likely to search for, but which might provoke a 'WTF' response if they see your full list. For example, I used 'I wrote this for my cat' as a tag once, and at least one person noticed (they mentioned it in an email). You might consider something silly or naughty like 'choke your raven daddy', 'cumming nevermore', or 'poe me in the backdoor lenore.'

This was excellent!
Why couldn't I study this kind of poetry when I was in school?

@SamanthaBehgs,
Your poem is fantastic. It deserves so much more views and I am not at all into BDSM

Oh my gosh, thank you! I had a blast writing it and kind of followed a process I've heard folk talk about here of letting it take itself where it wanted to go, so I wasn't very sure of myself, so your feedback means a lot.
