Help with Confrontation

I recently formed a vague story idea that I was hoping you lovely people could help me with. My dominant character wants to help my submissive character confront a flaw. I need ways that the dominant might force the submissive to confront that flaw.

The dominant in question is soft spoken, and willing to give either a caress or a smack, depending on which was earned. The flaw is defensiveness. About everything. All the time. The submissive's past was rough, and that has made trust and true submissiveness...well it's like pulling teeth.

Ds is new to me as a writer but a gut instinct suggests the Domme would be female...
