I'm working on a post-Apocalyptic story and I'm trying to come up with a name for a population of survivors.

I want them to call themselves "The Forest People", and since I envision the story taking place around Puget Sound, where there happens to be a notable population of folks of Norwegian descent ;), I was thinking of using the language for their name.

When I looked it up on a translation website, "forest people" translated as "skogen folk". I like the idea of calling them "the Skog" for short. Any Norwegian speakers out there who can verify if either of these terms will work? If not, do you have any suggestions?

Thank you for your help!

"skogfolk" would be more accurate than "skogen folk".

"skogen" is "the forest" whereas "skog" is just "forest". If you want to talk about "the forest people" you put the pronoun in the end: "skogfolket". No space between the words.

"We are of skogfolket" or "We are the skogfolk" would work pretty well.

Calling them "the Skog" might get weird, since the word has dfferent connotations in Norweigan. You'd literally be calling them trees.

Thank you so much! Skogfolk it is.

:D That's exactly the kind of thing I was trying to avoid. I like the idea of a shorter nickname, but not at the expense of my characters being considered wooden in some readers' minds. ;)
