I'm trying to fit a name with one of my characters and nothing I come up with seems to fit so I was hoping someone out there has an idea.

Female character, 16-1700s, eastern europe, very high status like a Duchess or something comperable.

Any ideas?

Whatever ya got.

I'm not the best with names, but I have this good baby names book..

Could you be a bit more specific about the location? Eastern Europe doesn't really narrow down my search by much.

Aleksandra Katzanek (polish)

Anastasia Orlov (russian)

I dunno... How 'off-the-beaten-path' do ya want it? Most names from that time period, in that region, seem very un-user-friendly to me.

I checked Google for "Slavic Names" and turned up 20000names.com and about 192,000 other pages of slavic names for men and women.

Hey CD, I found it really helpful when creating fictional royalty for the 16th century time period in Eastern Europe to take a look at the Hapsburg dynasty. It's the royal family that's linked to every royal family in some way. There's a wealth of interesting information about them out there.
Here's a link to the Hapsburg family tree:Hapsburgs
Here's another, Royal List Online, which lists every documented person of royal heritage and their title. It's a great place to look for first and last names.

Hi all, sorry I started this thread then abandoned it. Had to get the little deviant's dinner and to bed.

All of the names and links are great. I've bookmarked them for future reference too.

I tried the baby name books, (I have about 6 of them  ) but because the names are organised alphabetically, not by country, it's a little hard to use. Plus, I'm not sure which names are older and which are more modern.

Lucky, I thought about using Anastasia but wasn't sure if it would be to Romanov? But I've always loved that name, (I actually wanted to name my 2nd daughter that, buy I was over ruled.).

Colly, that article is great, now I want to go search my family line.

WH, that's the same problem I had with Google, info overload. Plus it's the same problem as with the babybooks, I don't know if the names are modern or old.

Scarlet, that's just what I was looking for. Perfect.

Cloudy, good link, bookmarked it.

Again, thanks all. :rose:

Oh, and Wishful, I like the name Fuck Knows, but it gets confusing when her partner starts screaming out "Fuck Me!" during sex scenes because you never really know who/what she's talking about. :D

I've found that when a name is listed by ethnic origins, they're eusually "tradiional" names rather than "modern" names. "Modern" names are those you find in "most popular names of 19xx" lists.

If you have a specific country in mind, you can eliminate a lot of the information overload by refining the search, but any one of the 192,000 lists of "Slavic Names" or "Baltic Names" is going to have basically the same names as most of the rest of them.

I wouldn't use a name like "Ivanna Getuov" unless you intend for your story to descend into a pun-fest.

My problems with Google usually center around being to general in my searches, or if I try to be more specific, my horrible spelling comes into play, muddling my searches.

I'm trying to avoid a pun-fest. :D I wanted something that sounded refined but not 30 letters long that I can't type repeatedly without having to check the spelling every time.
