I finally got annoyed trying to find out on my own, so I took some pics to see if anyone had an explianation.

I know all the laws about water expanding when frozen, but it just doesn't seem to cover this kind of action.

This is the fourt or fifth time I've found my newly made ice creating this 'spikish' formation while freezing.

What is the cause?

Here are two pics... The first is in the freezer as I just opened the door to get some ice.... and the second is out so you can see it better.

Any ideas?

IT'S ALIVE!!! IT'S ALIVE!!! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!!...

hee, hee, hee

I have no idea...but cool party trick. :)

WTF.

Woman, me thinks you need to move... lol, j/k.

Seriously, that is just one more notch on your freaky~shit scale.

No no no! No ghost explainations... Besides I smudged the house with sage and ran 'it' off! ;)

I want Scientific explainations to this.

It is really amazing me.

I have no idea why it's happening, but my ice has been doing the same thing.

The one theory I have is that the water was hot when I filled the tray and the evaporation condensed and froze quickly.

that's against the basic laws of physics, isn't it? gravity, etc.

Here is bit of added info that may matter.

These cubes are made from purified water. They are always crystal clear, unlike faucet water cubes that are cloudy.

The water is alway cold when I add it from the Brita filter jug.

Any help?

Really, this is baffling the cherry pie out of me!

Damn men, little freezer ejaculations. It happens, it's an ice thing. They see ice, sperms spew. Ice ejaculation. :)

I think that's it!

Other than that I have no idea, and I've never noticed it before.

But Starfish, I love your new av! My turtles sing on occasion!

My water is from the tap and it's doing the same thing.

Where's Weird Harold with the answer?

Yes, where is Harold. He'll know. He always knows.

HHHHHHAAAAAARRRRRRROOOOOOLLLLLLDDDDDDDDD!!!!

My lungs are shot. :)

These strange structures are the result of a phenomenon known as hydro-stalactosis.

As the water cools, heat is drawn off, usually to the center of any particular ice cube. The difference in temperature has to be just right, and if it is, warmer water is drawn to the center of the surface of the cube as it freezes. Water tension allows water to be drawn to this cool point and it begins stacking up as the crystals form. As the point of ice builds higher, it becomes fractions of a degree cooler than the lower ice and even more water is drawn up and freezes, until the majority of the cube freezes and there is no more liquid water to be drawn up.

All of this usually occurs at the point in the freezer where the coldest draft is circulating.

Damn...

...learn something new everyday. I've seen these things before, but assumed something had spilled. PC goes and makes me go look something up! Apparently it is a real balancing act between temperatures and the minerals in the water which are busy forming their own crystal lattice in the process. I never would have figured this one out.

Cool.

I was so amazed by the answer, I gave PC some pics of soapy wet booties.

Actually, I'm glad PC beat me to this question, because I had no clue.

Did I hear something about cherry pie? Oh, it's gone.

Damn. Spooky ice cubes, glad you found an answer.
