I'm writing a story about a primary school outing in the UK.

What I need is a credible destination that requires an overnight stay.

Who can help with a credible destination for a primary school that is far enough away from Yorkshire (or any other part of the UK) to justify that scenario?

(The story is about sex with a teacher, not the kids, but it needs the away night to make it credible.)

A sports event or some other type of competition is the best i can think of. School wins county heats then goes on to compete at country wide level.

I think the threat of crippling legal action has wiped out most school outings nowadays. Not worth the risk :(

That's too bad. We still send American kids on overnight trips. When I was in Primary School (I think that means elementary school here) we went to camp for a few nights in cabins and stuff. I know that many schools still do things like that. If kids want to go, there is a whole bunch of insurance paperwork that parents have to fill out.

We take the kids all over the place. Natural history museum, art museums, outdoor science school for a week. My sixth graders go more places than everybody. Gotta get 'em out into the world. A classroom is a dungeon.

I don't remember a single overnight trip when in junior school... Does is have to be a junior school, cos it's more likely to be an overnight trip when you're dealing with older kids.

On the other hand - I'm fairly sure a primary teacher friend of mine went on a trip to France or Wales with his class...
I know you want it to be realistic, but it is fiction. Don't worry too much.

Many schools and classes do overnight trips to any of the nearest Isles. Isle of Wight, Isle of Man, etc. In fact, it's almost a traditional thing in most of the primary schools I've been working with.

If you need any additional help/ info, I'm available.

An event at London's Science Museum that requires the pupils to prepare for and enter a competition to design and build a gadget e.g. mechanical egg transporter.

They would need a whole day at the Museum so would probably stay in London overnight the night before (and possibly the night after).

They could stay with host families from London schools so the teacher has free time in the evenings but is accessible on a mobile phone.

Thanks everyone. I had the basic set up, and writing the sex itself is the main task, but I just went blank on the destination.

Now my problem is choosing one of the options. :D

Somewhere in Wales might be a good place to send them - Maybe you could stretch your story to a weekend away - the schools around here do send the kids away for canoeing, mountaineering, trips like that. - Snowdonia National Park. :)

The Peoples Republic of Wales, just be sure they speak the language. Oh, and look out for escaped Napoleon clones.

I'll second the Isle of Wight. Just about every 10-11 year old I know has been on a trip there.

But my son went on two other residential trips while at primary school, one to a local environmental studies study centre and the other an activity centre on the east coast - Cromer to be precise - where he spent a very happy 3 days using quad bikes, ascending climbing walls, etc.

School trips are alive and well here in the UK. Of course, the forms you have to fill in before the nippers go away run to about 20 sides of A4... :) ...but they still get to go on trips, I promise.

Are there 'adventure' or 'outdoor activity' themed destinations for kids in UK? That would give you the benefit of very tired kids (out of the way).

Does no one read Jasper Fforde?

I was with you. The problem would be getting back across the Iron Curtain with all the contraband cheese.

I've got a head teacher friend whose school goes on weekend trips to Amsterdam, Norfolk and Yorkshire every year, often to do running, jumping, climbing nets kind of exertion.

When Mat Jr. was 9, he, 4 other boys, 5 girls, the male deputy head and I went to Wales on an outward bound holiday. We went by train, to Cardiff and were met by a van and driven to the centre which was out in the wilds. The girls and boys slept in their respective dormitories, while the male teacher (who was young, very good looking, very fit and athletic) and I had our own rooms. It would have been very easy to have been naughty.....quietly.

We did gorge walking, abseiling, rock climbing, caveing, and a whole host of other very active stuff. The kids were always exhausted by bed time, so the evenings were ours.............

That enough for you??

Too many suggestions - but thanks all the same.

My idea was 7/8 year old children. Young enough to have an early bed-time.

Leaving ME (1st person POV) alone with the teacher for the rest of the evening.

Clearly there are lots of ways this could be set up.

I just need to pick one up and run with it...

At my son's school the 7-8 year olds go to Whitby once a year for a few nights :)
