It's called VX2betterinternet and we can't get rid of it--we've run Ad-Aware and Trend Micro and we've tried deleting it manually and it keeps coming back. And my husband tells people how to get rid of virii every day for his living! If we don't run Ad-Aware every time we log in we end up with popups galore and all kinds of spyware and the computer runs slow and freezes up.

Try turning off "System Restore"

Click Control Panel, then System, then System Restore Tab,
check "Turn off system restore on all drives", then click Apply.
You will see the status change after a few seconds from "Monitoring" to "Turned Off".

Then run your spy bot programs and virus programs.
When you don't turn this off, it makes a copy of the little devil and restores it the next time you boot up.

Then, after you get rid of it and the next time you boot up, turn on system restore again.

Let me know if this works. It was a requirement to remove two stubborn things my friend had, a worm and a virus, Welchia and Beagle.

Thanks for the advice! I don't know if my husband remembered about this or not. I have passed it on to him in an e-letter. I have a PT session to go to and then work; I guess we'll know later on whether this works.

Slick Tony, I found the folks on the site listed below very helpful and friendly, posts are answered very quickly and they'll stay with you until the problem is solved. Highly recommed and worth bookmarking for future reference. Hope you get your computer sorted, it's hell!

I'm sorry that didn't help you get rid of your problem.
Good luck, and let us know what finally removes it for good.

Also, unplug you network cable before cleaning up.

And go thorugh the Add/Remove list in the control panel -- a few people do let you install themselves.

OTOH I met one the other day that re-installed{/i] itself thay way...

Thanks, ReadyOne; my husband did that. In fact, we've tried a variety of things, because things are more fucked up than they were before. Now Microsoft Word won't work. This is not good. All my writings happen to be in Microsoft Word. Strangely enough, Excel still works. But it's extremely bad news that MSWord won't work. I have my stories and stuff copied to the other hard drive, and also backed up on floppies, but I can't access any of 'em. I tried to reinstall MSOffice, but it wouldn't install. I just got through reinstalling the operating system, but it hasn't solved my problem. I think I'm going to try reinstalling MSOffice again (now that I've reinstalled the operating system) and then I'm going to go to bed. This hasn't been a good day.
