Okay....I recently upgraded Internet Explorer and Outlook Express to the new version 6.0. Then they both started gobbling up system resources, and found out that there's a lovely function to restore back to your older version (5.5). So I followed the steps...and Explorer works fine....but when I try to open Outlook Express now....I get the error message "Outlook Express could not be started because MSOE.DLL could not be loaded. I have emails and stuff in there that I'd rather not lose.... Does anyone know of a fix?

Thanks in advance.

Thinking of tossing away the machine and scribbling notes to people on the backs of old envelopes....

Which OS are you using?

Win 98 2E...which Microsoft said supported IE 6.0......

Well, I know that the latest IE, OE, Media Player etc... are now designed to allow you to totally remove them from your system. At least, that was the plan.

I had XP on my computer until last week. I had tried to remove IE from my system (it was an option under control panel/add-remove programs), but instead it gave me serious DLL problems like you are having.

The only thing I could suggest is that you try a reinstall of Windows...not a clean install, just a reinstall of Windows while in Windows.

How do you mean "gobbling up resources"?? I just upgraded mine and ditched netscape and so far...so good?

Resources would drop continually...until I would have only Outlook or IE open....and would try to open another program..and "did not have enough memory...close programs and try again" kind of thing....

It wasn't pretty.

Definitely a memory leak somewhere.

My friend's PC has a similar problem, and we couldn't figure out what was wrong. We tried everything.

In his Virtual Memory settings, there was a negative amount of Virtual Memory available. Does yours show the same?

You forgot to mention your Kernal32.dll faults

He has other DLL problems?

It's definitely time for a reinstall. I would suggest a clean install of Windows.

My virtual memory settings options are set to "Let Windows manage virtual memory" Don't know what it's doing....lol

But look in the box next to "Hard disk" in the Virtual Memory settings. Is there a negative number there?

nope. 3963 MB free, although it's greyed out.....

Ok.

I would suggest that you reinstall Windows. Hopefully it will copy over the DLL files that are corrupt, and replace the ones that are missing.

Weird Harold or others may have better advice for you though.

perhaps you could re-install the version 6.0 of outlook, get into the outlook and forward the e-mails you want to keep into a temp hotmail account or something like that. Then when you have backed up the e-mails you want you can do whatever it is you need to do to get your system back to the way it was before the "upgrades".

Just a thought.

You can export emails from OE.

don't touch your virtual memory

I wasn't going to suggest that he mess with VM....I was just curious as to whether or not he had a negative number in his VM. My friend was constantly getting those "Not enough memory...close some windows" messages, even if he didn't have any programs open. Come to find out, there was a bug involving IE, his mobo, and his new video card.

Can you export them if you can't get into OE? I think he said since he dropped it back down to a lower version he can't access his OE, thus the need for this thread.

check microsoft.com

You can do a seach on www.microsoft.com, go to their Knowledge Base, and then do a search for what you are looking for. I've usually had pretty good luck in finding out what to do. It didn't always provide "the answer", but it was able to eliminate alternatives, or at least point me in the right direction. It is a Microsoft product (Outlook Express), running on a Microsoft OS (98SE), so give it a shot.

Also - backing up your mail doesn't have to be done while running Outlook Express. There are like 3 files you need to be sure to backup: inbox.mbx, inbox.mdx, and something else... I used to do it, but I don't remember 'cause it's been so long. Microsoft's Knowledge Base should also be able to help with this. Do a search for "Backing up Inbox" with the Outlook Express program selected... and it should return the results you're looking for.

I'd try to solve this before you try to reinstall Windows. If you aren't sure about backing up files and restoring them from CD, you are likely to lose a lot of information during your Windows reinstall... Solve one problem first (Outlook Express). Backup your Inbox files (according to Microsoft), try re-installing Outlook 5.5, and restore your Inbox files. If this works, THEN see if you're still getting .dll errors. If not - no need to reinstall Windows. If so... then I'd look into backing up the entire system and doing a clean install.

Good luck!

You silly people with your microsuck problems

I see more virus' threads everyday, and I see just as many windoze threads....crap too. Just switch to a Macintosh, and be saved all that hassle. I rarely crash, and if I boot into OS X....it simply never crashes because it can't. Yes you might get a kernal panic(which is very rare), and if you don't download a bunch of shareware crap off the internet, and stick to apps that you buy you are almost golden. I say almost cause not everything is perfect, but more so than the 15+ win98 machines I support on a daily basis at my other job(ah the fun of having many jobs).

If you think different, you will cut your virus threat to less than 5%, and never be faced with the blue screen of death again. Imagine that my friends....imagine that.

Been windoze free since '86, and loving it....

:D
Switch and be glad you did!
