My truck won't start. WHen I turn the ignition, it clicks once, and then nothing at all. No noise, NOTHING. Just a single click as I turn the key. A single click when the key turns back.

Now, It ran fine yesterday
I can get it started by Popping the clutch
3 months ago my father had it totally looked over to make sure everything was ok.

SO, what can it be???

The Starter.

Might be a dead battery, does any other electrical devices work? It could be the terminals may be corroded and can't make proper connections.
Try each and sorry to hear about your trouble.

Your battery is the problem. First thing to try is removing the cables from the battery and cleaning both the battery and the terminal end. If that doesn't solve the problem, you probably need a new battery. All in all, this is a relatively inexpensive problem.

PM me if you need more help.

[Disclamer: I'm no mechanic, but I've driven a couple clunkers]

Here's what I'd do first.

Make sure the car's in gear (or out, whichever is necessary) before you start it. Sometimes a car doesn't get all the way into the Park position, even though it looks like it. Make sure y our wires are nice and dry and your battery has water in it (yeah, I know, but sometimes they honestly do run out).

Second choice - the ignition system somewhere (alternator or battery). If you seem to have a radio and lights, etc, it's not your battery.

Beyond that, mechanics usually mentioned mystical words like "solenoid" and I get lost. But the fix is usually really cheap, in comparison.

I also say the battery... been there done that :( Might wanna check the altinator as well hon. It may not be charging the battery like it should.

I'd go with battery first, but, check the alternator as well.

The radio and lights work, and can start it and hold a charge by poping the clutch
Could be the starter, that's my second choice.

Sounds like battery. Could be farther up the line though, like the thing that re-charges the battery when the truck is running. Could be starter too (and it wore out the battery).

OK, have gone through the gears, and started it by popping it, but it does it again after i turn it off.

The "solenoid" is part of the starter and I think it is one or the other. It isn't the Alternator because it will hold a charge.

What kind of truck is it?

Sounds to me (and Mr Freaky) that it's your starter or your starter celinoid (spelling on that??).

The fact that you can start it by popping the clutch suggests that the problem IS the battery, not the other way around. And, you can still get lights and radio but not have enough current to turn the starter. Try the battery first.

Its a 1987 toyota with 103,000 miles

ok.. let me talk to Mr Freaky

I'll see what he says. You are in luck.. he's home and knows Toys.

(pretty good mileage for that old of a truck.. ours is a 93 with about the same miles)

well

I would go with the battery and dirty terminals. Mine does the same thing when the terminals get corroded. (1992 :) )
Just a click. If the battery is dead it would still start by doing the clutch thing and could run fine for a few days and then do the same thing again.
Other than that I am not much help.

is there a possibility of getting your phone number? I can explain what you need to do easier if it was via phone.. or if you prefer I can type it all out here.
