Leaving from the UK

Early next September

Can only be a week long

Must cost about £2,000 or less for *both*

Prefer beaches, watersports, pampering

We've been looking at St. Lucia, because it's 8 hours away and that's about the longest flight we're prepared to consider because it's only a week holiday, but the prices are still a bit high... Have you got a better idea? or even a recommendation for a hotel in Barbados/St Lucia, because then at least we know it'll be worth that bit extra money?

I've been driving myself loopy trying to find something!

When I was in the Navy we pulled into Barbados... absolutely love it there... one of the better ports I've been to...

the VIslands are cool, but they aren't as large as Barbados...

I stayed in Bridgetown, but I've heard Sandy Lane in St. James is very nice...

I assume you are starting from Merry Ol' because you deal in pounds. I would suggest trip over to the US... Early September is great anywhere on the beach from New England (Cape Cod) and all points south. Every year we go back to Delaware (just south of New Jersey) the last week in September and the weather is perfect. After Labor Day (the first Monday in September) the crowds are gone and the weather and services are all still there.

I am sure you can find the kind of place you are looking for... (or someone here can recommend one). There are a lot of cool resorts along the southeastern coast.... Hilton Head... etc..

But my reasoning on this is simple..... the exchange rate is a killer right now at 2/1..... the US will be your vacation bargain. Since by next September we will still have the same administration... I assume the exchange rate will only improve for you.

This is also a non-peak time after the summer but before the winter Florida rates... all the better for you.

And congratulations..... :D

Thanks... can I just ask the flying times over to those parts of the world though? It really wouldn;t be worth flying more than 8 hours for a week only.
Also... it can cost as much as £800 per person to fly from here to there, which would leave us a grand total of $800 to spend while we were there... would that still give us an amazing week?

We just flew from Frankfurt to Philadelphia.... (roundtrip) for about $700...so I would think you could get something close to that (350bps)....

As for Flying time..... 8 hours is about right to the north east... maybe another 2 if you went to South Florida... but that is closer, I would think than the carribean ports... (which I also love, by the way)...

So.... assuming the airfare above.... you would have 1300 pounds left.. or $2,600.... Yeah... you could have an amazing time for that kind of money in September!

What about the all the normal Brit haunts? Spain, Canaries, etc.? There should be some bargains in September there as well.... They would even serve those bean/tomato greasy eggs/greasy toast breakfasts common to your otherwise delightful land.

Ugh. a) I wouldn;t go to those kind of places on a *normal* holiday, never mind my fucking honeymoon. b) It's cheap, quick and easy to get to places in Europe. eg- we can go there any time. This needs to be a 'something special' holiday...
Say we did consider New England - what state should be top of our list and why? Would there be any leaf colour in the second week of September? What would a really *nice* hotel cost?

I'm spoiled. I live 2 miles from the Gulf and havent seen it in years. I took a cruise 4 years ago and hated the islands. Its water and palm trees and the same shit I have here all the time.

I'm surprised the airfare is so expensive.

If the exchange rate stays the way it is, the U.S. would be a great idea. Florida has awesome beaches--and you've lots of Florida folk here to recommend good places. Exchange rate is 2-1. For every English Pound you get two dollars. So you'd have $4,000 to spend...if the exchange rate stays like that through till September. And given that places like Florida are big on tourists, you could probably find one hell of a good package, hotel and such all included.

And yeah, the flight is about 8 hours.

I'll be heading to New England in about two weeks, and for me, it's a big change as I'm in California. But I wonder how much of a change it'd be for you.

Then again, I'm not up on resorts and such in that area. Florida is what comes first to mind for a real, pamper-yourself-beaches and palm trees vacation.

I'm trying to get to the Florida keys, myself. I've been to several places on the eastern Fla coast. The gulf side has some great places, such as Sanabel. I haven't been there but friends have told me of places with cottages that are very romantic. For that matter, there are fairly inexpensive and romantic places (again, cottages) in Zihuatanejo, Mexico.

I'm sure you're right. Florida would probably at the extreme of the range. To be honest, it was so many years ago I can't recall how long the flight from New York to England was - for some reason about 7-8 hours sticks in my mind, .

There is a problem with New England. Thus is several years old, but I lived on Cape Cod which is ALL beach. The problem is that Cape Cod shuts down the day after Labor Day. Almost all of the fancy restaurants close, many of the hotels close or go to very limited service. When the tourists leave Labor Day night, everything shuts down. I assme that the problem is pretty much the same all over New England, but I am not sure. You might PM Seacat, he also lived there.

I'm 7th generation Floridian. Real Floridians never go to the beaches. Even in the 19th Century we went to springs when we wanted near the water. A cottage on the ocean does not impress me; a house built around a spring does. The problem, I think, is Florida beaches dont get much wave action. On the Gulf, waves are pitiful and pathetic.

My sister and her husband love this place. September would be a beautiful time to visit. http://www.biltmore.com/

September would be gorgeous there. North Carolina is probably one of the most beautiful states in the country, if not the most beautiful. Asheville's within driving distance of the Smokies, too.

*sigh* I am definitely going there myself one of these days. I've driven the Blue Ridge Parkway but it's been a very long time.

Well, we wouldn't actually. We have to pay for flights out of that too.

Mils, North Carolina has definite possibilities. There's the islands and the coast: Hilton Head (SC) and Nags Head are both beautiful (I like Nags Head better). Then there's Asheville and the Smokies within a couple of hours drive. It's a place I'd definitely consider, and early fall there is beyond beautiful.

I was lucky enough to live there for awhile. :)

Cozumel.....inexpensive and fucking A beatutiful. But September is the height of Hurricane seanson, so buy vacation insurance.

Gotta agree with Cloudy on Westrn North Carolina around Ashville. The Blue Ridge Mountains are gorgeous and theres lots of cabins that you can rent that cater to romantic rendevouz's. But you won't get the fall foliage till the last week of October and the first week of November. It's breathe taking.

Israel?

You could do a week in Jerusalem... it is worth it.
