Help! Its Pinewood Derby Time!

Here's the trick... Make it as thin as possible. That really gets down the resistance.

CHECK THE RULES FIRST... they love to nail the ones as thick as popsicle sticks.

I am shocked --- shocked!

First I read that only graphite is allowed, then EmI lets it be known that she bought Teflon.

What's the deal?

I was informed that you can't use any liquid lubes.

I think anything else is okay.

My son has done this every year forever it seems. He never makes the top three.

Anyone know how I can help him build a better car?

not sure will be my first year making them for my son but keep the weight to 5 oz or under.

..........or, better yet, rub plenty of graphite from an ordinary lead pencil on the axles. Just as slick and won't get gummy and drag.

Been there with a step son...........I took him out to the shop and showed him what tools were there and what they did and I merely supervised....offered verbal advice when he asked.....nothing more. His car was really nice when he got done but it definitely had that look of being done by a Cub Scout, not me. His wasn't fastest but didn't do bad......and it sure wasn't as good looking as the sculpted and lacquered and polished cars the other kids showed up with.........but guess who got the "Best Looking Car" trophy?? Yep! You guessed it. The older three guys doing the judging saw right through it and voted his best...unanimously. Shoulda seen some of the looks on the other Dad's faces! Kodak moment. It was worth it. He was the proudest kid you ever saw. He's 32 now and he still talks about it.

OK, I looked in the instructions.

Dry Lube only. graphite lube is ideal. So I guess the tephlon would be ok, but Im going to stick to graphite

Thanks, I'm unshocked now.

I'm surprised Redrave hasn't shown up here yet to remind us that the cub scouts are a paramilitary organization whose real purpose is to provide new recruits for the U.S. military's oppression of the rest of the world.

Make sure the provided nails are sanded smooth. I am reaching way back and I have not seen a kit since '64. Also make the car as slick as an arrow, and aerodynamic as possible. The most important thing to do is hollow out the car and add fishing sinkers, or lead weight to make it as heavy as allowable.

And lube the wheel and axles.

Good luck, building a pinewood derby car that was one of my most favorite memories growing up
