I've been stuck in the ice for a while now. My car is a 95 Grand Am with front wheel drive. The front tires are getting no traction, both right tires are surrounded by about 2 inches of ice all around the wheel. She can rock back a little bit when I try to go in reverse, but does nothing at all in 1st geat going forward. I don't really have kitty litter or cardboard. Is there anything I can do? The tires just keep spinning and have no traction.

Wait. Spring is just around the corner.

Why the fuck are you out in that shit? Haven't you seen the news reports?

This is me responding under another name, for the moment:

I have to get to work. Sad as it sounds. I should just call off, but I haven't yet. I work in a pharmacy and know how much they can use my help, but if I can't make it, I can't make it. I'm about a hour drive away from work now, under normal conditions. So, now I'm probably about 2 hours away at least. I live in Cincinnati. I have a feeling the interstates aren't as bad. I just have to get to them first.

You shouldn't try to pull away in 1st gear when stuck on ice. Reverse is worse.

You should use the highest gear that is possible without stalling and a very small throttle opening.

Earth, grit, or anything under the front tires would help but not if you use 1st gear.

Peeing around the tires can help if the weather isn't too cold...

I got the car free. It was a combination of rocking it back slowly in reverse, then plowing forward in first gear for the low end torque. I contemplated peeing on the tires. Thankfully, I used some hot water instead. The small throttle idea was what helped me rock it out of the spot. Thanks Ogg.

Hot water, if available, would have been my suggestion. Melt the ice, the problem goes away. If there is no hot water, peeing is a desperation solution.

I'd say that it was the ultimate connection between a man and his car to pee on the tires. Especially if he's doing so to free them from the ice. What a manly rescue mission. :D

And an excellent reason to have another cup of coffee or any other beverage of choice. "My car's stuck in the ice. I'm going to have to pee on the tires before I can leave for work."
