I'm sure you can all relate. The husband got it into his head (finally!) that it was time for some spring cleaning. Mind you, it's been about five years since the last spring cleaning. There are books piled up in the hall, by the bed, on ottomans, desk, under the coffee table...and, ironically enough, piled atop the bookcases. Also two deep on the library bookcase shelves (yes, we have a little "library" room with nothing but book shelves. Fat lot of good that did us).

I purchased some boxes and we're trying to make a dent. Two heavy boxes of no-longer wanted or needed books have already been hauled off to the library, and four more are being filled up as I speak....

I *think* I can see the floor in the hall, and the top of the bookcase is beginning to show through and a few of the shelves in the library have only one layer of books....

I'd ask if anyone had time to come on over and help us sort and shelve, but I know you'd all just sit and read

Sounds like my house. But all the books spilling all over the place give it a warm feel, I think.

If you decide to rid yourself of them... used books stores and libraries will love you. :D (So will folks on eBay or amazon books).

LOLOL

Oh how I know this feeling.

I donate books to the hospital every six months. Usually two or three boxes at a time.

Then again I pick up books at an incredible rate. Too bad many of my books are those I intend to keep.

I just finished building a nice large bookcase. It is eight feet tall by eight feet wide. I have already filled it. (Hell who am I kidding, it was filled before it was even half done.)

All my books are in boxes, waiting for a home. We had to dismantle the bookcases when we moved (they were too big to get out of the house in one piece) and aren't rebuilding till we have the final destination finished (we're building a house).
But since my books got boxed I've gained several more boxes - my parents moved into a retirement home after dad went blind and I got most of the books - not even sure what's there!
I think I'm gonna need a bigger house, just for the books...

And people at work are amazed when I say I have hundreds of books. Last time I moved they only filled 8 or 9 moving boxes. Although that doesn't include my text books and notes from college.

I have my own "room" in the house where my books, cds, and other assorted things live. The last house we lived in had only two bedrooms. Now we have three, so my things have their own room. :)

Well, I've informed the husband that we've got to have a new system for books: You buy one, you get rid of one (if possible). I'm determined that every book will have a shelf in this house and my reasoning is simple...when I go looking for a book I wanna be able to find it! I don't want it buried away behind or under other junk where there's no knowing/remembering we have it and it does neither of us any good.

Not to mention the layers of dust.

I'm finding all kinds of shit I didn't remember we had. I knew we had one book on forensics, but when when did we get that other book? A book on libraries of the ancient world? Cool. Coulda used that 18 months ago

The undersea archeological dig continues. We're bringing up books from the deepest trenches and starting to sort and shelve.

oooers, now that sounds nice...a bedroom to put my things and books in. Course it didn't help that today at the nursery was a large table of books someone brought in and put out to take for free. Now if I could just get time to read them. I'm turning the tv off in the evenings for awhile or I'll go hide int he conservatory to read one.

Over the past five years I have given seven metric tonnes of books to the National Trust.

They are selling them at one of their sites in Kent and making about £100 a week from them.

I still have too many books.

Heh. I keep thinking the best solution for our storage problems at home would be for the wife to get rid of all her personal belongings - and then get more shelves for my books!

So far, she hasn't agreed...

Latest on "The Great Book Haul-Away!": I'd forgotten how pretty the rug in the library was! The hall is getting a wee-bit wider and some room has been made on the shelves (that won't last!)...but the piles of books we still have to go through is downright scary. Book boxes should number about ten once we even out the weight in them....and that's right now. We're only about half done.

You know, Lady Threelish, you could save some for your trip to the Book Barn this fall. (You're driving, right? I can't remember. If you aren't, then this idea will blow goats.)
You could pack some of the ones you want to get rid of and trade them in for credit (a.k.a new books!).
Your load won't get any lighter, but if you were gonna go there anyway, it might be a not entirely sucky idea.

Oh, and you're right. I would totally read and not help at all.
Not without a pull on the pigtail and a chocolate lure...
