I went downtown to the arts thing they got going. My best friend and her boyfriend were performing. I went down there to enjoy the scene and people and photograph my friends.
I pulled up to a curb one block away from the main strip. There were cars around, but I was next to the old YMCA of which I am a member and a place where I feel safe.
I got out of the car. Walked about 10 steps. A black man was walking in my direction. I veered my steps to the right so that I might pass. He veered with me and was upon me.
Give me everything you have, he said to me, give me everything that you have or I will clock your ass so fast you won't know what hit you.
"He could kill me right now" I thought to myself as I reached for my wallet, which I opened, and from which I withdrew $80. He took the money and allowed me to keep my wallet. What else do you have he asked, and don't you make any sudden moves or I'll bust you like a motherfucker. I do not know if he was armed. I saw no weapon. Hands in pocket though.
He felt the pockets in my coat and found my mother's digital camera, which he took. He left me my car keys, 2 packs of cigarettes, my wallet, my chewing gum, and most important- my life.
I have never been held up before. I reported it to the police immediately and spent about an hour with them. Tried to do 2 IDs on people whom they picked up. Finally, the cops got the report. I located my friends. We went and ate in a restaurant. All of the people and all of the policemen were very kind to me. I watched my friends play- no pictures, but I am at home, I am safe, and it is quite possible that the theif will be apprehended (or so the police have told me). I will cooperate in anyway possible. Some people should not be on the street.
Notes, for questions. He was much bigger than me. Remember- heh- I am 5'7". If he did not have a weapon, he would have licked me good. And I can also tell you this. No weapon would have helped me. I am not going to walk around my city with a .38 at my side. In fact, if I had had a gun, he would have taken it, and possibly even used it against me.
I am at home. I am out a measley $80, the camera was purchased for $275. And I am alive.
I am alive.
Sorry to be a drama queen about this. But it really happened. And I wanted all of my friends to know and to tell them. Please be safe.
