Has anyone heard about this? Apparently, the Israeli military is calling people to let them know that a bomb will soon be landing close to them.

While avoiding the pro/anti Israeli argument, I think this is a very unique idea for attempting to limit civilian casualties.

This statement is the ultimate no brainer:

"It's intense psychological pressure," said Abu Ahmed, a spokesman for Islamic Jihad. "They're trying to force the civilians to drive the resistance away from the civilian population centers."

Well duh. Who wouldn't want their enemy driven out from among the civilians?

"I asked if he was joking, and he told me: `The Israeli Defense Forces don't joke,"' No shit.......... :D

The IDF don't joke

Yah, I've heard about it. I'm more astounded they still have functional phone lines in southern Lebanon.

The thought occurs that if they know the names and phone numbers of civilians that they're about to bomb, then surely they shouldn't be bombing them? I would've said the purpose of bombing was to kill enemies or to destroy enemy facilities (which would presumably be manned by enemies). This smacks of just destruction for the sake of it.

Indeed.
It's intimidation through fear.

Pure and simple.

I mostly disagree with that. Hezbollah, and many other terror type organizations make it a point to hide among the civilian population. Safe houses, weapons caches, etc. In those type situations, it's very possible that your next door neighbor could be involved. They're targeting your neighobors house, it's still likely that your will get damaged.

The first known case of a pre-strike warning call came on July 23, targeting the Gaza City home of Mohammed al-Sheik Dib. In that case, neighbors generally acknowledged that al-Sheik Dib was a ranking member of the Islamic Jihad militant group, and that rockets probably were being stored in the house. Jihad gunmen surrounded the house immediately after the attack and barred all access.

Okay, that's fair enough.

Actually, it's pretty meaningless since they bomb the shit out of all escape routes.
