I know this is an odd question (but it is the "how too" forum so no harm. Also this is my first post so I may be in the wrong place... I want some advice on how to walk in heels. I usually wear boots with a couple inch heel, but am trying to progress to higher. I am fine in the house but am concerned about falling over outside, any ideas would be appreciated.

Practise. If you can walk indoors with heels , then you will be OK outside

I don't know how I walk in high heels, I just put them on and walk.
The only thing i do know is, my steps are shorter with heels.

Try practising indoors first and when you feel comfortable enough move outdoors. Make short trips at first, take small steps with one foot placed in front of the other and try to keep your shoulders back so you won't hunch forward.

I don't know if this helps but from the one-legged standing poses in yoga I know that it's easier to keep from losing your balance if you focus on one specific point, the idea being that if your eyes stray too much the body will follow suit.

Good luck!

I wish I could offer practical advice but alas, I am also facing the problematic end of the question and not the solution.

I was browsing a store the other day and tried on a pair of 4 inch heels, just for fun. I was starting to get dizzy up there! lol Seriously though, I have always been a flats/ 1- 2 inch shoes type of girl but would love to learn to walk in heels as well. Not for everyday use, they don't strike me as very practical to be honest, but to be able to vwear actual heels when dressing up for a date or a more formal event and walk in them confidently without feeling like I would tip over and possibly break my neck with every step would be awesome!

Since I am a big girl, I am thinking along the lines of solid heels, not the ultra thin spiky ones of course, you know something that is height weight proportionate with the rest of my curvy self. :D

Is advancing gradually a good idea? To start with say, 2 inches maybe and work yourself up from there gradually?

Thank's for the tips. I seem better with thicker heels, or even thin heels that have a platform sole. Guess it's gonna have to be a lot of practice. If I break my ankle I will let you know how not to wear them lol.

That's a good idea. Also, starting with shoes that have a bit thicker heel and then gradually going more narrow works for me when I graduate up to a higher level. I'm quite comfortable in 3 in heels, but recently acquired a pair of 4 in heels. Veteran heel wearer that I am, I'm still having to practice moving about in them before I'll feel confident enough to wear them out in public. Hope this helps :).

Be sure the soles aren't slippery. It's hard to keep your balance when you're sliding uncontrollably across the slick floor.

Trust me you get used to them, just be careful of rocks when you are outside! Or slippery floors inside.......I wear heels pretty much constantly. Just practice inside your house until you feel comfortable and start out lower heels and gradually work your way up

Tammy..just put those stilletos on and walk across my chest and we'll send the instructional video to Milly. Ya know, like you did in your dream about us last night.

I get to peak up your skirt, though....

:)

Watch out for cracks, gaps or grates when you are walking in stilletos... There's nothing less attractive than your stiletto heel falling down in a crack/gap then your shoe coming off your foot coz your heel is stuck!

As it was mentioned over and over, practice. I would suggest that when you feel comfortable in your heels at home, go grocery shopping at a relatively quiet hour then progress to 'rush hour'. The floor tends to be varied, so you get to experience everything from slippery to rough surfaces.

Good luck

a little story here.
I was in my brothers wedding as a brides maid. I had on this beautiful maroon/white dress and of course - had to wear heals.
It was a winter wedding, and walking around on cement from the car to the church, was a pain in the neck lol I got out of the limo, got about 10 feet and stepped on some ice i couldnt see, slid about a foot and landed on my butt. The heal of the shoe got stuck on a weird groove type thing in the ice - broke my ankle. So my advice - BE CAREFUL and learn to walk in them before venturing out in the winter. lol
I suggest walking outside, back yard or garage and such to get the feel of how it will feel on different surfaces. Practice makes perfect, there really arent any special techiques to learn how to walk in heals.

Good luck.

Thank's again for the advice. I suppose it is a dress thing really, boots are ok with some dresses but there are times when only heels will do. I shall practice inside and in my back yard, so no one can see me fall on my ass. Thank god we don't have any snow at the moment or ice.

I live in heels, so really it's just practice makes perfect.
My biggest advice would be do NOT change the way you walk because you change the shoes. Girls have a tendency to walk stepping on their toes first which results in that clomping you see people do. So freaking annoying. Continue to put your heel down first, don't be afraid of putting the heel down first, the shoes is stronger than you think. It's the most natural way to walk.
Also be sure to walk with confidence, nothing is sexier. If you do happen to fall, don't be afraid to laugh it off. When you laugh people are less likely to care.
I also don't think it's going to matter whether or not you slowly go up in sizes. I can walk wonderfully in four inchers (or the eights at work) but I have trouble with kitten heels. Less than three inches and I end up being one of those clompers. *hehe*
Also keep in mind the best way to get that sexy sway while still being subtle about it, make sure one foot is exactly in front of the other. Walk with your feet on an imaginary straight line and your hips naturally sway. I don't do it all the time, but it works when somebody cute is watching. :)

!

Why would she place one foot in front of the other? It sounds
like the kind of training a model would take for the catwalkMaybe that's the best
way of learning,I don't know.

Walking in heels with one foot in front of the other emphasizes the hip sway that draws attention to the hips, ass, and thighs.
I can't stand watching a girl who's unused to heels walk with no sense of hip swagger. They look like football players!
Heels are supposed to be sexy, and you should perfect the art of walking with beautiful, bouncing hips.

start off by wearing the size heels you are used to wearing and buy a 1/2" higher each time you buy a new pair of shoes. if you build up gradually you are less likely to notice the difference until you become used to wearing each size (then you really will notice and you'll feel wierd wearing low heels, your feet feel flat!)

if you are worried about slipping, take a knife and cut the bottom of the soles, that will give you traction until they are roughed up from wear.

heels require stronger ankles, so i really wouldn't recommend going from flats to 4" over night. i also wouldn't recommend wearing higher heels for a very long period of time when you aren't used to them, they require more use of your calf muscles and cause charlie horses in your legs at night.

do keep your shoulders back, you change your center of gravity on heels and you are more likely to fall if you are hunched over. try not to be sway backed (boobs out, butt out), it's bad for your back.

don't let the soles/heels wear out and become smooth, you are more likely to slip that way (any shoe repair will replace the heel cap for you)

again, i recommend working up in 1/2"-1" increments until you reach the heel height you are looking for, it won't take that long.

good luck......there's nothing that makes you feel sexier than a dress with a great line and a pair of really great heels

It's not necessarily the exaggerated-type of swanky stalking that the models do... unless you're trying to draw attention to yourself, and some women just naturally do that in the way they walk. Walking that way, with one foot in front of the other, creates more of a smooth, rolling of the hips and ass... Models walk in more of a cross-over motion, which creates that extravagant swagger. Totally different ways of doing it. One is much more comfortable than the other.

I often wondererd why they walked one foot in front of the other.
It certainly looks good.I would of thought the sway of the hips came naturally.
It's good to learn something.

Actually, you are correct, in a way...it IS a natural movement of the hips to sway when you walk one foot in front of the other...It's a very feminine, natural movement. Try it sometime. By yourself....lol ;) :D
