Hear Something, Say Something

I like to talk about music. What I'm listening to, what I'm not listening to, favorite songs, memories, reviews, etc. It's one of my favorite ways to get to know a person, finding out how they relate to music, agreeing or disagreeing, that kind of thing.

So, this is a thread to do that. I only ask, nay, plead that you say something about the music you link to or list in your post. Names and song titles out of context don't really do anyone any good, it's just a catalog and there are plenty of those out there. So if you want to make a list of five songs, then tell us what that list is supposed to be, and why you picked those songs. Or what your favorite song on that list is. If you're listening to a song you like, tell us why you like it. It doesn't have to be an essay, just a few sentences (hell, a single sentence is better than nothing) to give it some heft. You'll be awesome, I know it.

Anyway, have at it. Link, list, write, blather, whatever. I look forward to reading what you've got to say.

Top Five Toes

I'll go first.

The best thing Apple has ever done is make the Top 25 Most Played playlist a permanent feature of iTunes. It's probably 35% responsible for hooking me to my iPod, even more so than the convenience and functionality of the device itself. It's like my own personal Hot 100 chart, and I track it regularly. Because I am self-obsessed, I suppose. The #1 track is, and has been for several years now, "Roadrunner" by the Modern Lovers. #2 is Pulp's "Common People" trailing by 9 plays, close but still pretty far behind in terms of play frequency. Is it likely that I'll listen to "Common People" 9 times before I listen to "Roadrunner" again? I love both songs, and they're played enough that "Roadrunner" is able to keep ahead pretty well.

It's also worth noting that much of the top 25 is dominated by songs on my Exercise playlist. Le Tigre, Prince, Air, the Ramones...when I first started at the gym I listened to those songs every day on the treadmill. Then I discovered podcasts, and now the Exercise list has regular competition. Which means that different stuff - slower, sadder things like Red House Painters and Behead, and some comedy tracks are starting to populate the Top 25. It's an interesting mix.

Nothing can top "Roadrunner", though. Going faster miles an hour. Got the radio on.

I'm an only fools and horses fan (maybe geekily so) and watched the prequel Rock n Chips. It had 'I Wanna Walk You Home' by Fats Domino which I really liked. Well before my time and not the sort of thing I listen to, but probably listened to that more than anything lately

Plus, any AC/DC song gets me, but You Shook Me All Night Long starts with: she was a fast machine, she kept her motor clean, she was the best damn woman that I've ever seen, she had sightless eyes telling me no lies, knocking me out with those american thighs

(or something like that anyway haha). Wicked.

Thanks for posting, man. I know "Only Fools and Horses" because I've seen it stocked in this store in my neighborhood that has a big section of food and other goods from the UK, but not sure what its about. Is it sort of a cult movie?

Was a fairly long-running (started in the 80s) sitcom about a couple of brothers and their grandad (later their uncle) living in a shabby south london flat. Pretty funny, or so I always thought.

Tuesday's Gone by Lynyrd Skynyrd just turned up on my Ipod and it reminded me of Dazed and Confused - cracking film. Everyone's got a favourite film full of classic tunes (haven't they?) - what's yours?

I'm seeing them as an American Original, indigenous to SoCal. Love the blend of different styles, the phat grooves and the horns!

Manic Street Preachers - when I was a kid the first album I ever had was given to me as a present by my older brother. That was 'Everything Must Go' and (save for the odd listen to Jacko) was my proper introduction/capture into music. The Manics were my favourite band for years and the more I listened the more I preferred the earlier albums.

So here's to Ritchie James Edwards and a first re-run of Everything Must Go (albeit mainly after he'd gone) in years - still good stuff

Have you read the comic "Phonograph" by Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie? the Manics play a pretty big part in the plot - you might dig it.

The top 25 thing on iTunes is great, but if you aren't using last.fm, then you should check it out. It keeps track of everything you listen too. It's amazing, just in the sense that i can look back 5 years and see what i was listening to.

If i somehow missed a mention of last.fm in this thread, then forgive me and my rum.

I am a Shazam junkie. It's an app on the iPhone (there's one for the android, as well) that listens and tags songs that you may be interested in knowing more about. It's good for TV Commercials, movies, songs in the mall, etc. Any time you really want to know the artist/song title .... you can then buy the song on iTunes.

Recently they've added a lyrics feature that displays the lyrics while the song is playing.

Giant Steps Backwards?

I started writing this whole thing wondering about why John Coltrane is still held as one of the four representatives of jazz in the larger culture (along with Miles, Louis Armstrong, and Duke Ellington) when a good portion of his recorded output would largely be considered inaccessible to an average listener, but I started to get up my own ass about it and the argument fell apart. So here's a shorter version of what I think I want to say:

I think its weird that one of the forefathers of avant garde jazz is also held as a staple. I guess it's because not everything is so intense, but can you imagine an uninitiated listener moving from "My Favorite Things" to "Chasin' the Bird"? It would be like seeing Captain Beefheart on VH1.

I don't mean that we shouldn't love John Coltrane, and that his name shouldn't be used to help attract new listeners. It's just a piece of cultural shorthand that I find a bit baffling. That is all.

I find things like this very interesting, because 20 years ago it wouldn't be that easy to find out about music. The internet has changed everything.. I remember exchanging mixed tapes with friends in grade 7. (yes, CASSETTE tapes.) That's how you found new music.. that or the radio.

Now you can download a bands entire discography in 10 minutes... and decide whether you like them or not in 5.

Back in the day, you had to commit to a band! Not anymore it seems..

No, but I'll have to check it out. I think their song Suicide Is Painless was the theme-tune to MASH but not sure if they originally wrote it


I noticed on another thread that someone mentioned Since You've Been Gone by Rainbow. Forgot about Rainbow, so I've downloaded some - going to be a ride
