She evolves. Not a sudden jump; she slowly grows, moves from Alpha to Beta. Your authorial job is persuading us the evolution makes sense. Probably beyond their binary dynamic -- I would introduce some change agent, some event or person who disrupts their antagonism. Event: one could be injured (accident, attack, rape) and need care leading to bonding. Person: son gains a friend who threatens mom's place in his life. Either way, they're forced to adjust -- and love.
