A true story from Construction News 16.02.06
***********£1m Payout for site fall**********
A lift engineer who survived a fall down a lift shaft has been awarded nearly £1m for his injuries..
Here's why..........
Mr Smith was checking a lift from a maintenance platform, when the supporting rope snapped, plunging him 11 floors downwards.
..then
A motor weighing approx 110 lbs (that's a little over 7 stone) which had also been on the platform, fell on top of him....
...then
The accident happened at night and Mr Smith lay bleeding and semi-conscious in the pitch black for five hours until the alarm was raised by the morning shift.....
...then
During the rescue, the fire services knocked an access hole in the wall four floors (nearly 20 metres) above him, showering him with debris.....
....then
When they eventually broke through the basement wall, Mr Smith was hit on the head with a hammer.
He remained in hospital for eight weeks, suffering multiple injuries.
The insurers for lift manufacturer Kone, Zurich Insurance then literally added insult to injury by spying on Mr Smith looking for evidence that he was exaggerating his claim!
Mr Smith now suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder
