read a story that had a lovely preface thanking the wonderful editors, only to find typos and spelling errors littering the first page? Hell I just found one in the first par.

I'm tempted to leave a comment telling the author to take a baseball bat to their editors. It kinda ruined an otherwise good story.

I've seen a few of those, and was tempted to PM the author and ask them who the hell their editor was. Then again, I doubt I have ever submitted a 'perfect' piece myself, so that would be somewhat hypocritical of me.

But then again, I don't go out of my way to thank an editor . . . .

Blubbing an' stuff

<listens> Wait...what was that noise?
Oh, it was the sound of a thousand heartsick editors crying out at the same time!
Horrors!

Edited to add: Some writers ask their editors not to look for spelling, grammar, and all the rest of the proper stuff because they just want help with ideas and plots. Although, if they ask their editors to omit editing punctuation and spelling errors purely because they don't think there could be anything wrong, eek.
Some people have reliable nets to catch those sorts of things, but I would say that even under the best of circumstances, one can never solely rely on oneself for that. Too close to the story.
Still, I don't think that means that an occasional error will mar the entire work.

Yes, I have seen that a few times. One of the authors used to be a regular around here...
