Were you ever outside and had to shit or piss really bad and didn't have immediate access to a toilet or outhouse and had to improvise by digging a hole in the ground and doing your business in it?

Did you cover up the hole with dirt afterwards?

Don't you know how to shit in the woods?

Of course, you cover the hole up.

I have camped rough for a long time.

I have shit in the woods more often than you have masturbated.

And not just wild. In yards and gardens and roadsides too.

Sometimes we lack time to dig holes or cover them.

There was the time we were north of Ciudad Durango. We stopped at a Mennonite farmstand for tortas (subs) with fresh cheese. Too-fresh cheese. Unpasteurized cheese. We ate our fill and drove eastward. Our guts churned 1/2 hour later. We stopped the car by a tranquil farm roadside and dropped our pants. Vast green fountains erupted from our butts and sprayed across the drainage ditch. There was nothing solid to bury.

Aren't you glad you asked?

If you are on the move, then a hole is not necessary.

If you are encamped with a group for a period of time, it is imperative.

If you are in a small group in bear and wolf country, then it is a matter of life and death.

You could always forget digging a hole and just shit on the ground.

The wildlife does that, and whatever outdoor environment you're in is littered with animal dung.

The Boy Scouts used to recommend digging a hole, and then covering it up.

Now they take portable toilets.

Leave no trace, dig the cat hole, stir it up and cover it. Unless you're hiking an area that you have to pack it out, then you better have your little blue bag.

as population increases, you go from dropping and walking to digging and covering to packing it out to bringing facilities.

Most places I go you can still do the walk but ocasionaly you gotta dig
