Have you ever been tempted...?

To troll? God knows I have. My new story is currently leading its category and is in the top 10 stories of this month so far. I actually stand an outside chance of winning something for the first time ever.

Then I look at the stories ahead of me - they're mostly Big Long Novella Chapter 25, or Chapter 13. They've had a chance to build up followers. The onyl reason they've got voting averages as high as 4.97 is that the only people who have been bothered to read that far into the story are diehard fans, who'll always vote a 5. It seems so drastically unfair - my story stands or fails on it's own merits, as a single entity. Their's is only voted on by fanboys who loved the other 24 chapters.

Just for a minute I was so tempted to 1-bomb them. How dare they use that unfair advantage to get in front of my best ever story? And in that brief moment I had a scary insight into the mentality of a one-bomber. It all seems justified when it's in the cause of promoting your story. :(

Worryingly tempting, but I'm glad to say that I ended up on the light side of the force and didn't vote at all.

I'm sure I had a point to this thread when I started, but it kinda ran away halfway through. Vote 5 for my story anyway. It's quite blatantly not gonna win, but it is the best I've done and I'm so glad that I didn't sully it with cheating.

Mostly I feel the temptation when I have just been bombed. It really stirs the angry little child in my heart - "THEY did it FIRST!" Eventually I come to my senses and remember that I'm on an Internet server and not the Noble Prize committee ;)

I'm not tempted because I refuse to be as petty and ignorant as them.

I'd rather meet them in person and punch their teeth out.:rose:

I haven't been tempted to low ball someone else's submission, but I do admit that the first time I asked for 1 votes to be removed was because one of mine was up for a monthly category nomination. Before that, I just shrugged it off. It wasn't until I actually had something worth watching the votes for that I cared when I got trolled.

I've always been honest in my voting...and in my PC's as well. For the last 7 years or so, if I think a story deserves a vote, I give it the vote it deserves.

What really pisses me off if the number of people who read a story and don't touch the vote buttons. I have a few stories that are straight 5's and over half of them are 4.7's or higher.....but they only have like 5 or 6 votes....and 35,000 views. What the hell! Lazy people not voting anyway!

Nope, I've never been tempted. It's a very low thing to do.

So glad you saw the light, Earl. I really hope yours hasn't been bombed to oblivion now, but a thread like this is just crying out for such attention.

Funny enough, it has never crossed my mind until NOW, EARL!

lol - never been tempted. I do not believe even the worst of stories deserves a one. They deserve at least a two for the attempt, but then again, I generally stop reading after the first paragraph if a story is that awful, and I go on to read something more suited.

That being said . . . I stick to my morals and try to be objective. Contests, I have recently learned, are quite the lesson on the importance of staying your ground. You know that there are those, or friends of those who probalby lowball everyone else in the contest. But, can you really be happy to have won something with that on your conscience?

It's kind of like RL. The cheating back stabbing, sons-of-bitches might be richer than you in the end, but at least I can be truly proud of my accomplishments. :)

(ok - too much for this time in the morning-lol)

Oh, sure. Not for the reason you put forward (to advance my own work), but to strike back at the vicious fucks who just want to drag me down for "succeeding" on some level.

I want to fight the injustice. Just my nature, I guess.

Well isn't that just CRAPTACULAR! ;)

Edit to add: hey Sweet. I'd say you get around, but that's typical of Lit I think :D

well, no, i cant say i ever have felt the urge to do that. even when my stories get bombed. i usually just whine about it.
i suppose i feel like what comes around, goes around...let fate take care of the little shits who are mean... ive better things ta do...sumphin sumphin[/endthoughtprocess]

I've never had the urge to give anyone a 1 vote out of pure spite. Of course, there are plenty of stories out there that do fall into the 1 category in my eyes. But if that's the case, I just don't vote for them.

Saying that, I'm no angel when it comes to my own stories being trolled. Before I knew there was such a thing as Laurel, I'd respond to rogue 1 votes by visiting as many friends as I could and using their computers to 5-vote it back up to its previous score.

As you can imagine, it took quite a bit of time and energy - and unfortunately I don't have those things anymore. So if I'm trolled and I don't feel like going running to Laurel, I just take it like a woman. At the end of the day, literature's such a personal and highly-subjective thing that I'm still not sure how one story can be ruled as being 'better' than any other.

For the most part it seems like most of the people on this board take the voting thing a lot more seriously than I do. (Ask me again if I don't win, place or show in the Xmas contest, for which I have a decent chance. :D )

Oh, I do. I've voted on many a horrible story here and given them the ones they earned. I'm sorry to hear that their well-deserved one votes might have been removed by Laurel. I hope that when a story shows no sign that the person was attempting to communicate with others in English, she leaves ones up.

And then only the fans vote, and that 1-deserving story ends up at the top of its category...

I vote on the stories I read, be it 1,2,3,4 or 5.

Been tempted now and then to troll one down a bit more than it deserves. When I've browsed the toplists for good stories, clicked on a high rated one, and...well...it's not rubbish...but far from the best in the category. Dull narration, boring plot and cardboard characters having pathetic sex with "cummingggggggggg" in the end.

I want to vote 1, just because they don't deserve the praise. But I end up voting the more honest 3, because that's what I sincerely feel they are worth.

Does that make me a troll? Then so be it. Trolls can be cute.

you bad boy earl, you're going over my knee for such wicked thoughts:devil: ;) auntie lorri is going to have to take you in hand young man.:p

sweet boy, so glad you resisted the urge in the end, it would just make you a nasty little shite with no life like all the 1 bombers that frequent this site... now come here and take your punishment:D

Ahhhhh ... but when voting anything other than a 4 or 5, does anyone leave a non-anonymous PC? I don't simply because I fear the knee-jerk retaliation. I will send constructive criticism via e-mail ... again, anonymously.

I only leave praise (or sometimes bad puns in good humour) as PCs. Now and then suggestions via email. But I don't do either as much as I should.

you're so right darkness honey, that alway amazes me, i've only got one story posted, and it was only written as a piss take really not serious like... and to be honest my editor did more work making sense of it out of my scribbling than i did writing it:D

but i've got a total of 189 feedback emails as of last night when another arrived, and loads of ordinary lit emails, all telling me how they enjoyed the story... how horny it made them feel... and how they had to wank off all over the floor cumming about six times, then having to clear it up before the wife got home, or mum came to tidy their bedroom... then there's 13 public comments all barring one complimentary about the story... and yet it has nowhere near the number of votes that it does emails and comments... go figure... i suppose they must all get wanking too soon and can't hit the vote button at the same time they're tugging their dick.:D

Tempted, yes. Acting on it, no.

If I did that i would be a troll. They lead such stunted lives I don't want to become one.
