Now, i know some people on Lit see FAN FIC as plagiarism, even though by definition a possible author is a fan of said show, character, etc., and many authors still put their heart and soul into their work. i think, just like with original work, it's a labor of love!

That said, off and on (hey, if i had school or work i didn't care about missing an episode, and you could miss a year and catch up on the storyline in a month or less!) i've watched All my Children and One Life to Live since i was a child.

Sure, there were many cheesy and downright stupid side storylines over the years, but as a whole i think the backbone of many soaps was good. What inspired me to write this thread was today's (Thurs, Aug 16th) build up for tomorro'w 10,000 episode!

Okay, so i'm a sucker for touching story lines (and cried at many Series Finales), and while not quite a finale today's show brought tears to my eyes. i also think it's nice and touching to see the same actors and actresses grow up, or simply change and age over the years. Hard to see that in shows anymore since even the "long running" ones end after 7 years of joy.

So, i'm wondering, is ayone else truly a fan of soaps? The downs as well as the ups? :) Is there "Lit potential" in such a fan fic? Post your feedback, please! i'm dying to know! :)

It's not that some see Fan Fic as plagarism, it is plagarism, plain and simple.

Offer your reason why, then. And while you're at it explain why many shows have/sponsor their own FAN FIC sections or sites. (Like The L Word.)

It's copyright infringement. It's not your work, simple as that. Some authors, and owners of copyrights are very zealous in protecting their work, Disney and George Lucas for example.

Other writers, or owners of copyrights may see FanFic as a good thing in helping to promote their original work. In this case, they have given their permission.

The bottom line is, you just can't use someone elses intellectual property without their permission.

Not that it's likely to happen, but I would be damned pissed if someone used characters from my work in their own story.

Ok, slightly off topic, but why don't you start up a SRP and be soap like. Even use one of the corny names, All My Children, One Life to live so on so forth. ;)

Alternate idea, you can start a series or if you find enough people a chain.

Well, i'm not looking to do a SRP. i was just wondering if it was an area of interest.

i suppose Lit better get rid of their Celeb section complete with the "people VRS Larry Flint" article then.

It would be an area of interest I am sure. Assuming you stay away from the stupid part of most soaps.

Well OK, there is one thing you would kinda have to do, the old baby turning into an 18 year old trick the soaps are fond of doing. ;)

I remember a lawsuit a few years ago involving Warner Brothers and cartoon porn sites (George and Judy Jetson, Fred Flintstone and Betty Rubble, etc.), and of course we can't forget Tecmo's wrath over Ninjahacker's DOAX nude patch and skins.
