You hear it so much, from so many people, that the phrase has lost any intimation of sincerity. I see people mouth the words and speak them through lips that barely even move. So, this is what I do:
I ask for a suggestion as to just how I should have a good day. I've had some interesting replies, (none of which I can recall).

blue

p.s. Have a nice day :)

Sometimes I say "Don't tell me what kind of day to have." Bitchy, I know. But only when someone is as insincere as possible.

Personally, I like the little pleasantries that pepper everyday life. I do prefer them with a bit of sincerity though. Eye contact is good. So is a smile.

Of course, I just spent a year on the east coast, where *nobody* even acknowledges your existence, much less says "hello," or "how are you today?"

Ruby, west coast gal and happy to be around pleasant people again.

ruby,
i know what you mean. i think my customers are a little frightened when i'm nice to them. maybe i should practice being a mouth new york broad :D

hey Blue

This same thing began to bother me a few years back. When I heard myself telling my kids to "Have a good day.", I began to wonder what that meant. Like maybe I would tell someone to, "Not have a good day."? My solution has caught on well. My kids regularly throw it back at me..."Make a good day." Not a Dirty Harry kind of "Make a good day." More of a, I-expect-you-to-do-more-than-just-wait-for-things-to-happen-to-you-today kind of "Make a good day."

So Blue, Make a good day!

Life can be so pro-active.

I dont use "have a nice day" often, and then mainly only to strangers. I prefer "take care and be well."

I usually say, "Have fun!", or in a Scottish rolling, "Have a grrrrreeeeaaattt day!"
Having a nice day involves doing what you love to do, leisurely, no rush, no hassles, no "down" time.:D

I am one of those people who always say, "Have a nice day." And I also am one to utter, "Please enjoy your day." Then again, I've also been known to write, "Don't forget to smile lots." Yes, I know that you might think I don't mean it, but the fact is I mean it with all my heart. I don't even have to know you and I'll speak or write those words to you. Why? Because I feel if I say that to you, you will have a day that is a happy one. I guess it's that I'm wishing a day like that for you just in case you're not already having one. It could quite possibly be that I am having a wonderful day and I want to share it with you in the only way I know how. Is this getting confusing yet?

How can you have a nice day? Well, for starters, you can pass that energetic phrase along to the next person. But the clincher is….you must totally mean it. You can't just say it because you think you have to. The feeling attached to those words must come from within your heart.

Another way you can have a nice day is to smile back at me when I wish that for you. But, again, there is a clincher to this smile….your smile must be a true and real one. A true smile is one in which not only your lips turn upwards, but your eyes also scrunch up a little bit and they turn upwards, too.

If everyone meant what they said, it would be a wonderful phrase to use. I know when I hear that heartfelt wish, it makes me feel good inside.

So, to Blue and everyone here at Lit, please have a wonderful day and don't forget to smile lots. This is being written while I have a smile on my face and it's a true smile at that.
