Wishing a Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers here! :rose:
And to all those whose mothers are still around, be sure and let them know she's important to you.
My mother's long gone, but my dear wife is the mother of our son, and we'll be celebrating it as a special day (I may not even turn on my computer on Sunday).
Your mother (or wife) should be special every day, but celebrating is also good.

Thanks!

I personally think the Saturday before Mother's Day should be the childless day where all mothers get to go away without the kids for the whole day. It is actually amazing how much better they treat me after I am gone even for 20 minutes!

I love my children madly, and I am fortunate to get to spend a LOT of time with them. I would not trade it for the WORLD and a paycheck on top. I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to be mom and do my best to do my best. It is humbling and a little scary to be such a central part of another person's world, even a little person. I am not sure the littlest of mine even totally understands that he exists without me.

Shit I am even doing a Mother-Son karate class. White uniform and all. That is dedication.

chop chop!

Happy Mama's Day to Y'all! Hope you get to sleep late! :rose::rose::rose:

I heard a little news story that indicated most mothers would like some time away from the kids, far more than flowers, candy, meals etc. No indication if away from the kids meant with their husbands or just by themselves.;)
Any way it goes, I hope its a happy day!:)

oh, of course, your MD is later than ours. so Happy Mother's Day out there for anyone here celebrating it. :rose:

Our Mother's Day came from the Civil War. It was meant to unite mothers of opposing sides. Where did British Mother's day come from?

I'm in a strange place, my wife will release our daughter from her body next month. I think I should recognize her as a mother, since she's mothering our baby, just inside her body. Any ideas? I got her a present, but I don't know if I should make it like a big deal or just a small deal. She's not easy to gauge right now. She could possibly respond with: "I'm not a mother yet!" and then go off to her room and cry.

in the Roman religion the Hilaria festival was held in honour of the mother goddess Cybele and it took place during mid-March. As the Roman Empire and Europe converted to Christianity, this celebration became part of the liturgical calendar as Laetare Sunday, the fourth Sunday in Lent to honour the Virgin Mary and the "mother church"[2].

During the sixteenth century, people returned to their mother church for a service to be held on Laetare Sunday. This was either a large local church, or more often the nearest Cathedral.[1] Anyone who did this was commonly said to have gone "a-mothering", although whether this preceded the term Mothering Sunday is unclear. In later times, Mothering Sunday became a day when domestic servants were given a day off to visit their mothers and other family members. It was often the only time that whole families could gather together, since in other days they were prevented by conflicting working hours.

By the third decade of the twentieth century, the custom of keeping Mothering Sunday had tended to lapse in Europe.[2] It was revived through the influence of American and Canadian soldiers serving abroad during World War II, who celebrated Mother's Day on the second Sunday in May.[2] People from Ireland and the UK started celebrating Mother's Day again, but on the same day Mothering Sunday had been celebrated before it fell into disuse, the fourth Sunday in Lent.[2]

Mothering Sunday remains in the calendar of some Canadian Anglican churches, particularly those with strong English connections.
well, you know your wife better than i do. and yes, i liked being bought a mother's day pressie while i was pregnant. something small and sweet. i have no idea what, though. it's very individual :rose:

I much prefer the name Mothering Sunday to the Americanized Mothers Day but not being blessed with being a mother anyway it tends to get by-passed in this household
Epmd I wish your wife joy of her blessing

Happiness To All....

I forgot today WAS Mother's Day until I got here, lol.....

Wishing happiness ro Mothers, Mother-lovers, and all of us creative folks, as well....maybe we all qualify for the obvious reasons that we are mammals, and we create, another requisite.....

@Annie, you're a 'mother' uvva writer, lol.....I include you, so there! ;)

Great idea, Anna. Happy Mother's Day, all! And yes, interesting how a peace event became a Hallmark card event, but I guess Hallmark has to make a dollar, too.

Epmd, how about a wonderful massage with, say, Apricot Kernel Oil (aromatic and edible!) while you play some relaxing music? Chocolate Fondue is also good.

Best wishes to all you mamas, stepmamas, grandmamas, and dads-who-have-taken-on-mama-roles. :rose: x 12

You can always learn something around here. Never heard of Mothering Day, and didn't know the origins of ours. I did know it was not a 'Hallhark holiday', which I think some others are.

Epmd, the massage might be a good idea - I know that food can be dicey in such a circumstance.
I had nice plans for a dinner for her, but ended up just going out and bringing back burgers.

Happy Mother's Day to all you mothas. :)

My babies are about grown now, but they both called and sent flowers so they are def on mom's good side today. And eagleyez gave me a sappy card, a poem and chocolate chip cookies. Wotta guy.

Anna, I would love to see you and your son in karate class. I'm sure you are the cutest and definitely the most poetic karate pair.

um. we are quite a site. him with his long hair hiding his face, me trying not to bust out laughing half the time, the other half wanting to break something hard.

TODAY: Due to all of the good morning snuggle interruptions, I cannot say "I slept until"but I CAN say I stayed in bed until 11:30!!!!!!!!!

Best
present
EVER

Saw Avatar at the dollar theater with the older two
Went to an indoor playground with free wi-fi with everyone after

So I know it is too late, but for the Mother To Be question: When I was pregnant, my best mother's day present was an antique rocking chair. I remember rocking away with my huge old belly, thinking of all of the mothers and grandmothers and fathers who rocked babies to sleep and maybe themselves in that chair.

Sigh. 12 years ago! Holy cow.

Tempus fugit, huh? The rocking chair is a wonderful gift--I would love that feeling of being connected to those other generations of mommies. I'd imagine them looking out for me and my baby because I, like you, have an overactive imagination. :D

Best Mother's Day prezzie ever for me (well besides the homemade presents usually involving little hand prints and flowerpots and such), is a locket given to me shortly after I found out I was preggers with my (now 22-year old) son. I have a baby pic of him in one side of the locket and a lock of his hair in the other. I feel close to him when I wear it. I'm a sentimental fool.

I think many of us are sentimental fools.
Every month, on the 10th (we got married on the 10th), I bring flowers home for my wife.
She often is taken by surprise by these mini-anni gifts.
