Happy May 24 to my fellow Canadians

I know Victoria Day isn't officially until Monday but I wanted to get an early start...before the beer is gone.

Cheers :D

That requires an explanation for (some) us Anglo-Saxons. Not the beer but the day.

Monday is Victoria Day here in Canada. It's usually referred to as the May 24 weekend. It's the first long weekend of spring and it marks the beginning of relatively good weather. People open their cottages, watch the non-lit related fireworks, drink beer, etc.

For the former queen or can any Victoria claim the day as her own? ;)

Ahh... a pagan festival (was there anyone there in dark pagan past?)

Sounds late in the year, the Icelandic people celebrate spring in February with Black Death spirit, smoked head of lamb and slices of rotting shark, now that's a pagan festival :D

You can claim it as your own if you like. I ran it by the senate and when they woke up they said it would be ok but just for you

I'm not sure if Queen Victoria was a pagan but we're doing our best to turn it into a pagan festival. Not alot of sharks in the great lakes however.
In February the blizzards tend to have an adverse effect on the BBQ's. You can make snowmen though.

And this year, Victoria Day holds an extra special meaning to me. :cathappy:

Too bad my name's not Victoria. If they ever decide on a Glynndah Day, I assume I'll be notified. :cathappy:

The name Victoria is really popular here. I have like 7 Victoria's in my phone book and my circle of friends isn't even that big.

Yay us!

Tomorrow night I go to The Beach and watch drunken louts maim themselves with fireworks.

It's a personal tradition. :D

Happy May 24th to the Scottish Empire of Canada.

You know you're really Scottish, don't you?

:rose:

As long as I don't have to eat haggis, play golf, or listen to more than one set of bagpipes at a time (1 set, played well at a distance of over 15 feet, is fine)...sure, I'm Scottish.

Victoria day is good though, marks the beginning of planting weather!

I was there for this weekend last year. Looks like I'll miss it this year, though.

Hm. So, Charley the Canadian was born on Canada's Beer Day. Interesting. Don't tell her I was here and said this, though. :D

Some of us are French loving Irish...loving beer.

It'd be great if I got a day off work in memory of every dead English Queen. Don't get me wrong, I love Victoria...B.C. :)

A sunny and warm day - perfect for Victoria Day! If only we had bought flowers to plant ... ah well, just have to drink some coolers/beer and fire up the barbecue later on. :D

Happy Victoria Day to all the Canucks - Spring is now here (except in Saskatchewan - I heard they got snow on Friday).

It would be even better if we got one for every dead king. There were more of them. (Medieval sexist beliefs)

Be it known that I was born in a time when Canada still celebrated Queen Victoria's, well, as a sex writer and in retrospection, death I hope.

In essence, my dear Lauren, I was born on the same day as that knickers bunched Queen (I think she must have been a repressed lesbian at heart) and I don't recall it being a beer celebration at that time.

In my memory (other Canadians may have a different recollection on how Vic day turned into May 24 weekend), this is the short history of Victoria Day celebration in my experience:

We used to have a big ta-do with firecrackers and a day off from school (which is the only reason I truly recall it being a holiday because who the hell knew what July 1st meant other than another day of summer vacation).

Somehow, a Prime Minister named Pierre Trudeau came in and fucked up our chances of somewhat freely studying and working and living in the UK by bringing home some sort of paper called the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms - in essence our Constitution (even though an episode of "Law and Order" said Canada has no constitution so how can we (Americans) rely on them).

After that, there was nothing left to celebrate, really. It was, at least for a few years, a day added to a weekend and everyone went north to clean the cottage. Since cleaning the cottage is rather dull, Canadians began inviting friends to help clean the cottage and that was also dull. In order to alleviate the tedium some brewery invented the case of 24 beers and then ... there was light (not Blue light until the 90s, though) and celebration. Suddenly, there was reason to go to the cottage and every Canadian began referring to the Victoria weekend celebration not as Victoria day or May 24th, but as MAY TWO-FOUR.

And that's the history of it in my particular memory. I would love to hear other Canadians share their memory of how Victoria Day weekend transformed into May 2-4 weekend? :D

Edit to add: This explanation is also directed to Neon.
