For my son

Suffering Children


My son does not understand — how could he
When no one can understand this?
It rains on us now, never ending,
And the black stone of noon falls against the
Windows and doors of the house and
Bars our way.

He paints the disorder of the world
In garish purple and black
But cannot paint an absence —
Though I see him standing back from
The easel and contemplating where
It should go.
He is still too young to make do.

Thunder crawls across the sky —
Pronouncing the wind,
The fragility of mountains,
The crack behind which an enormous sun
Lurks and blinds.
Sirens criss-cross in the distance
And my son can recognize them all:
This is how he has memorized our situation,
In the sounds of an unknown accident.

He cries for an hour
And cannot be comforted.
I do not want him to believe lies, but the
Truth is too huge for belief.
My voice croaks out a
Meaningless phrase.
I do not know what I meant.

Afterwards, we make a little family from blocks:
a father, a mother, a boy with
Outrageously tall, blue hair.
This family is happy and together.
There are no blocks to show the
Storm around them.
