One hundred and thirty seven years ago, Canada got off to a great start with a combination of British politics, French culture and American efficiency. Now what do we have? French politics, American culture and British efficiency!

Seriously. I love my country. More than any other, it tries to work out a spirit of compromise on all matters. We really try to balance the needs of the many against the needs of the few.

Sure, we've had our miserable failures. The head tax on Chinese immigrants and the way we've destroyed our native cultures comes to mind. But over all we've been tremendously successful.

So, today, July 1st, is Canada Day. And I'm posting this to let all my friends on Lit to know it.

We're still The True North, strong and free!

Happy Canada Day, RG! And that goes out to all the other Canadians out there, too. Most notably, Charley. :rose:

Um, when you said "British efficiency" you were being sarcastic, right? Cos "British inefficiency" would be more like it. :D

Lou

I thought Canada Day was a reletively new holiday to fill in the wide gap between the obsolete celebration of Queen Vic's May 24 birthday weekend and August 1st, whatever holiday that is? Well, I sure don't recall this one when growing up. Nonetheless, I'll take it. Happy C-Day Rgraham, enjoy the fireworks.

AND THANKS LOU!!!! :rose:

Yeah. It's like the old joke where in Heaven the cooks are French, the English are police, and Germans the engineers.

In Hell, the cooks are English, French are engineers, and the police German.

Happy Canada Day, RG and Charley!

I have a soft spot for a certain Canadian, so I'll join you in your celebration...

Happy Canada Day to all our friends in the Great White North.

RG - You forgot:

In heaven, the lovers are Italian and everything is organized by the Swiss.

In Hell, all the lovers are Swiss and everything is organzied by the Ialians.

Thanks, Lime. I knew there was more, but in my brain dead state I couldn't remember it.

Cheerful? Great, we Canadians love our beer! Can't stay long. I have to work. And then get a long night's sleep.

I have a date tomorrow!:nana:

far farking out

Confidence is sexy, my man! And Toronto can be a delight to roam in. May you build something new in the world.

Canada rocks, too, but my good vibes go to you, kid.

Thank you all! For both my country and the personal stuff.

Gotta run! I have to work in an hour and a half and I still haven't showered yet.

Oh! Gotta new story up! Pug, plug.

A bump for Canada. Happy holiday to rg, Charlus and any other far northerners.

your neighbor, Perdita :rose:

Have a traditional Canada Day Celebration, rg, and all the other Liters above 49, also.

When you have finished, could someone please tell me what-the-heck it is Canadians celebrate on August 1st ... or is it August 3rd.

An old flame of mine was Canadian, he explained what he used to do (go beer camping) but could never identify the holiday.

He though maybe it was called Midsummer Madness, but he wasn't certain.

Happy Canada Day!

Isn't waxing your Beaver cruelty to a native species?

Do the beavers object?

Thank you to Canadians for their help freeing Europe in WWI and II.

Yer welcome. Anytime og.

Virtual? I believe the first weekend in August is John A. Macdonald's birhtday. He was out first Prime Minister.

He was also a famous drunk.

One day on the campaign trail he was on a dias with an opponent. About 3:00 in the afternoon which meant he was well into his second bottle of gin.

As his opponent finished speaking, Sir John walks to the edge of the podium and pukes over the edge of it. Standing up and wiping his mouth he says, "Now that I've dealt with my opponent's platform…"

But don't quote me on this.

The first weekend in August has, for me, always been the "It's still summer and it's been five weeks since the last long weekend so my boss can go fuck himself" holiday.

I spent my Canada day eating canadian bacon, cutting out paper maple leaves and petting the beaver, while drinking LaBatt's, playing hockey and saying "eh" a lot. Then I listened to k.d. Lang and sang the Canadian national anthem.

I got release from the hospital today. They said there is no such thing as Canada and gave me some pills.

Most of what you have confessed is mere harmless eccentricity, but you don't mean to tell me that you actually petted your beaver in public?
