I wish.

I had Indian food.

But several of my eldest and youngest daughters' friends are Indian. One of my favourite memories is going to an Indian restaurant in London with them. They knew what to order, what the restaurant's specialities were, and how to contrast the flavours.

I just ate and enjoyed.

Naoko's cake looks far too rich for an ancient Og to eat more than a small piece. So there are many slices to be shared.

The large family celebration was yesterday - in a restaurant. We had chocolate cake but the youngest grandchild preferred ice cream. At 14 months she expressed her preference very strongly, shaking her head vigorously every time she was offered cake, and opening her mouth wide for ice cream.

Tonight was a much quieter affair for just the two of us. While I enjoyed yesterday, it was pleasant to share a civilised meal with my wife of 40+ years, especially with no cooking and no washing up.

When the family meet as a group my hearing becomes a problem. With or without my hearing aids I find it difficult to participate in conversations when several people are speaking in a noisy environment. I hate background music! It makes listening to people virtually impossible.

Next year is a more significant date. The grandchildren will be a year older and we might be able to go to a restaurant that is not sold as family-friendly and does not have background music.

But yesterday and today were pleasant.
