I have a nerdy, geekish friend in Canada that follows such things, unfortunately she was not online this night...thus....
: If you have NASA television channnel, JPL is doing a live broadcast of the approach of the impact vessel on the comet...very tedious watching and badly produced, but still interesting...about 90 minutes away from impact, 2am my time, 11 pm your time....
amicus: noted a small anomaly in the narrative....they said the comet is hard to target because the jetting of gases as it approaches the sun changes the orbit slightly...yet they say the 'impact' of 800 pounds of copper at 23000 mph will not change the orbit at all...hmmm....
amicus: since I have no one else who is even aware, you get the brunt of my curiosity...smiles...think I mentioned on the Cassini-Huygens probe, about automatic navigation, auto-nav, as systems of on board telescopes thatriangulate star positions...they are using it on both the impactor space craft and the 'fly by' space craft, which separated about 24 hours ago. and the data from the auto nav is translated on board to the firing of positioning thrusters on the impactor and the fly-by machine to place them in the right place at the right time....all done without human intervention....rather complex....and somewhat amazing.....smiles....bear with me....
amicus: ah, yes, impact time is changed by 8 minutes, to 1:52 am...my time...
amicus: The asteroid is said to be 'pickle' shaped (?) and is rotating about once every 40 hours....
amicus: and about 9 miles long....they did not say the diameter....pickle...dill or sweet, kosher or otherwise?
amicus: from three previous fly bys of other comets...the began with a resolution capable of seeing objects 100 meters, then 50 meters then 25 meters and with this one...1/2 meter resolution, so best photos ever of a comet's surface....( in case you were wondering...) smiles...I be a nerd
amicus: there are about a hundred geeks, all with LCD display screens....(sighs) dressed in either red or blue T-shirts...one for the impactor craft, one for the fly by...and the women are so geeky they don't seem to care if panty lines show through slacks....grins...yeah, something I would notice....oh, well....this rant needed a chuckle....
amicus: newest images shows more 'eggplant' shape than pickle....
amicus: 30 minutes from impact....
amicus: second positioning thruster burn completed....one more to go before impact...
amicus: without audio or commentary on NASA, I am becoming adept at reading geeks facial expressions and body language...vaccilating between many extremes with each new revelation....
amicus: now calling it an avacado shaped asteroid...grins...
amicus: final thruster burn for course correction in 5 minutes...
amicus: 10 minutes to impact, geek's all twitterpated....secondary thought...they expect to make a crater in a rather hard substance and measure explosive debris...what if it is a puff ball and disintegrates upon impact?
amicus: final course correction was successful, impact craft is now in defense mode for dust and debris from asteroid, but transmitting pictures until destruction....
amicus: 5 minutes to impact....
amicus: loss of signal from impact craft...either hit or missed and went behind, but photo's show impact and good resolution of craters on asteroid....it is from the Kuiper belt and is thought to be a 'middle aged' asteroid.....
amicus: 1:56...geeks went nuts! impact confirmed! they hit the damned thing!
amicus: "we hit that sucka!" they shouted....
amicus: the asteroid apparently did not disintegrate upon impact as I thought it might....
amicus: an extremely wide field of debris from the impact crater...they seem ecstatic....
amicus: 600,000 people emailed in their names...which were inscribed on the impact craft...and are now dust....smiles...ain't we a strange species....?
amicus: and now the California politicians...senators and representatives have descended upon the geeks, chaos reigns....late night game shows, even on the 'left' coast....sighs....
amicus: world wide, international cooperation, with over 60 land and space based observatories participating....
amicus: live coverage stopped...all seem very pleased with results....so there you have my minute by minute synopsis....smiles...hope you appreciate...
Happy Birthday America! As you concentrate on distributing condoms and killing babies, we are moving into the future....cheers....
I know, who asked me...
amicus...
