Amazing how strong this alliance has been even as the tides against the west have turned.

Secretary General celebrates NATO’s 75th anniversary with Allied leaders on the eve of the Washington Summit

Warning that “there are no cost-free options with an aggressive Russia as a neighbour; there are no risk-free options in a war,” the Secretary General said that the biggest cost and greatest risk will be if Russia wins in Ukraine, as this would embolden President Putin but also other authoritarian leaders in Iran, North Korea, and China. “The time to stand for freedom and democracy is now; the place is Ukraine,” he said. Mr Stoltenberg concluded by saying that the Alliance will continue to face difficult questions in the future, but that “we are stronger and safer together, in NATO.”

I would think that part of the support for NATO is because most people understand that having allies is better than going it alone. Another part is likely because politically and financially having the US make up the brunt of the exposure and cost is smarter than telling the US to get lost and that your country doesn't need them or NATO. Finally, there's a unstated recognition that the US military doesn't fuck around while most of the NATO members are more politically outfitted and aligned in their combat readiness.

Glad that you are here to celebrate 75 years of NATO. 👍🥳

Biden gives fiery NATO speech

An energised Joe Biden addressed NATO leaders at a summit in Washington about the military alliance’s future amid war in Europe. He appealed to Democrats and Republicans watching at home by invoking Ronald Reagan, a former Republican president. In the speech, Mr Biden announced more aid for Ukraine, but also sought to reassure doubters about his ability to lead. Meanwhile, Donald Trump demanded that Europe send $100bn to Ukraine to “equalise” American support. European countries have sent around 60% of the $319bn of economic and military aid committed to Ukraine since early 2022, according to the Kiel Institute, a think-tank.

My life has been more secure knowing that NATO exists - from when I once lived hours from the Fulda Gap to this year seeing Sweden now joining. Europe has been without major conflict during NATO’s existence and I’m more than willing to have my tax dollars help peace continue and mark the aggression of our enemies for decades on end to come.

i like the content of the article quoted, but cannot but help notice that they fail to address the president by his title even once in the piece in your post.

i know President Biden is often seen saying 'Just call me Joe"—humility and image cultivating—the lack of the use of his title in the media breeds a certain sense of reduced respect for the position, imo. In certain quarters of the media, it's still almost guaranteed to hear trump being called "president Trump/ex-President Trump/former President Trump' even as they then go on to speak of the actual president of the United States this past 3.5 years as "Sleepy Joe/Biden/mentally deteriorating Biden."

it's an accumulative effect. Yes, presidents are only people, but the office of presidency should surely still be held in the greatest of respect... the Convicted Felon formerly known as President Trump has a fucking lot to answer for in bringing it into such disrepute.

anyone who thinks putin would stop at Ukraine if trump gets in and backs off, permitting putin free reign, is either totally uninformed or so insular ("America's so far awaaaayyyyyyyyyyy from Europe, there's a big ocean, lots of water, water which has salt in it and boats don't like salt and planes would likely have to refuel which is hard...have you ever tried getting a straw into your mouth when the wind's blowing your cup??" /trumpisms) that they feel the rest of the world doesn't affect America much, none of our business.

if trump gets in, the Balkans will see a resurgence of putin's proxy players, including the Serbian attempts at genocide all over again as it tries to 'reclaim' the land it desires to make a bigger, better Serbia.
