Handwriting On The Wall For Teachers.

I'm wondering if neighborhood rec centers wont replace schools. Coaches and teen counselors will herd the kiddies around, staff will give mom updates on computer classes, etc. Call it daycare plus.

I interviewed for a teaching position at a web-based school. The classroom was an office, where I would teach, on average, a "class" of 15 at a time. I didn't accept the job, but it was an enlightening experience. I opted for the traditional school, traditional classroom, and face-to-face interaction. There's nothing quite like it. But, I suppose just like how online games are face-toface games, schools will one day become obsolete. However, I still think it's a long way off. At least, I hope. :)

The idea of having kids take classes via computer is a compelling one. First, it's cost effective, because the district doesn't need to maintain a large, expensive facility. Second, it's effective for the student. The student can 'preview' several teachers form the on-line roster and decide which teaching style best suits the student. Third, each student gets a quality learning experience, because the bad teachers don't have students sign up and the bad teachers have to find something else to do. Fourth, there is a periodic check on each student, via on-line tests. If the student keeps failing tests, it's back to the physical school. Fifth, all testing can be objective. The tests shouldn't be subjectively graded and the student should have an appeal process available on-line. Sixth, the student works at the student's own pace [within limits] and at the student's own level. The student can fool many of the teachers I became familiar with, but the student can't fool a computer over a long term. Seventh, the student can get effective help. The help might not come from the teacher whose class the student is taking, but from another teacher(s). The help that works might not come from the best teacher, but may be a combination of help style and multiple help sessions.

Yes, yes, and yes.

I really see teachers as the next large herd to go extinct, becuz theyre expensive and so many are pedos and incompetent.

What happened to the amicable tolerant James that's been on the boards lately? Did you forget to take your happy pill or do you just miss the excitemnt of having Stella around? :D

I'm out of happy pills and cheeseburgers. Been writing porn all week, too; it'll put anyone in a sour mood.

R.Richard, a thoughtful Post your #5...aside from defeating the Teacher's Unions, a difficult task; even more so the dependence of local government on Property Taxes that everyone, property owner, renter, businessman pays and seldom even notices....beyond all that, the biggest hurdle of all....there is nobody home in suburbia any more.

Thas right, all them lovely liberated ladies, the single mom's (can't hold a man) and government subsidized day-care, there is just, 'nobody home', and online learning will remain in the future until the ladies decide to nest once again.

First the Revolution....then the civility...

This will fail. Miserably. Teaching needs to be personal, face to face.

If you look at places like Japan you see better treatment of teachers and they put out very high quality students. And the Government oversees their education, too. Imagine that.

The Japanese, Koreans and Chinese will be laughing their ass off at us for even thinking of this.

ETA: the first post-mortem that will come out when this system fails is, kids will be less socialized because of online education. A whole fucking generation of nutjobs just like the average Literotica poster.

OK, what would you do if youre the mayor and have no money? You got the cops and sanitation workers and firemen and everyone trying to climb up your ass for money to save their jobs AND you have 2500 teachers?

An almost equal money saving approach james would be to shut schools down for one year. That's all it would take to balance a city's budget. One year. By the time the kids are eighteen, I doubt it would matter much in their long-term education. At least that's what the data says. Hell, it might even help some of the young boys, since they're generally pinned as being the difficult ones at the elementary and intermediate levels. :)

I think we need to get serious about how helpful school is. The idgits get nothing from school and the brainiacs profit regardless of where they are. Maybe it night be better to remove the idgits from the classroom, supply them with basketballs and condoms and put them in prison at 13. Send the brainiacs home, too, with a computer and a library card. And let the schools work with the average, well-adjusted kids who make the world work.

I'm sure you were born and knew instantly how to read, as with every writer here. I'm sure you knew how to spell, how to convey thoughtful passages from stick symbols, how to measure the square footage of a house, or multiply for that matter. I'm sure you didn't need any direction at all, or anyone telling you how to act when little Jimmy had a poptart and you didn't. I'm sure you were born with all the knowledge of ancient history. I'm sure you automatically knew what a cell was and its anatomy. I'm sure you already had the Periodic Table memorized before you reached the birth canal.

But, the fact is, we are born knowing very little academia, and if you want to build a society, you must have it. And the best way to get it, is to give each and every student a chance to learn, regardless of IQ or past history. Hence, the need for schools.

All aboard the failboat. That's all they can do.

The revolution has alrady ocurred. It's called the computer revolution.

A kid(s) stays home and works at school work. The computer tirelesly tracks what the kid does. The kid can fool momma, the kid can fool a teacher, the kid can't fool a computer. [Wait, you say, the kid gets someone else to do the school work. The someone else either has to be another kid, who has to do his own work because BigBrotherComputer is watching, or the kid has to pay an adult to do the work. If the kid has the money to pay an adult, the butler and the maid will soon put a stop to that foolishness.]

Defeating the teacher's unions is not really a problem. Put a few kids on-line and the results will soon force everyone to buy into the concept. The bright kid will zoom through the work and get far better results than someone forced to wait for dumbdumb to catch up. The average kid will do better, because the computer will recognize the kid's weak areas and put more stress on the weak areas. [Remember, the kid can't fool the computer.] The dumb kid will also do better, because the kid can plod through material at his/her/its own pace and will have lots of 'individual' [on-line] help.

The kids will be tested very frequently. Problems wil be identified early and solved while the problems are still small ones. The computer can monitor a child's progress and provide intensive help when a kid encounters a problem. The computer is never too busy with other students to help a kid who encounters a problem.

If a kid just won't do the work, then its back to brick and mortar school where trained teachers can ride herd on the few kids who don't want to do the work.

Some children are destined for heavy thinking, and some for heavy lifting. When they come to school everyone knows which children naturally belong where. Actually, schools exist to regiment and discipline children. Children did better when schools were operated like German prisons instead of like Disney World on Gay Day.

Funny, how brick and mortar schools in other countries are doing quite fine.

The part you're missing is that some children may be born to lift, but it doesn't mean they won't contribute to the thinking, and possibly even in a very large way. Castro was a lifter, yet his thinking shaped a lot of the learned of Cuba. I'm not saying for better or worse, but it shaped it. Well rounded people are what makes the world go 'round, not all kinds. :)

And have you been to a high school lately, many of those kids work their ass off as if it was a German prison. If you're referring to elementary, everyone knows you get a child to learn through fun and games and interest. You don't need a punishment to get a child to learn their multiplication tables, you need patience and creativity.

Try reading the Sun UK newspaper to see how English schools and kids are doing.
Fair enough. How about the Japanese, Koreans, Chinese, East Indians, etc. students? I did mention them before and no one seemed to have an answer for that.

Also, how will these kids, who learn primarily by computer, get socialized with their peers? Your way will lead to a generation of latch key kids who at best won't even know how the world outside works besides what they learned by rote memorization.

Fidel Castro has a law degree. He was never a sugarcane cutter.

Every real socialist-communist nation I know of plucks the idgits from the vine as soon as theyre old enough to pick beans and cotton. Give the young ones jacks & marbles until they weigh enough to work, then toss them out. End of teacher stress and public expense.
