Halloween Support Thread

I had a 4.88 before the trolls were told that they could vote 2s and not have them taken down.....

*just shakes her head in disgust*

Why don't they keep everybody's scores private until after a contest is over, or made it so that you only knew your own score and not anyone's else's until the end. Wouldn't that eliminate any temptation to sabotage and keep everyone in suspense until the end?

Just a thought from an uninvolved bystander who wishes everybody luck.

As I entered knowing i'd be no challenge, Halloween just isn't my thing -I don't even really like it *laughs* I've enjoyed it, I've done better than I expected and got loads of positive comments on it, so I'm happy :nana:

See ya BT!

It's just irritating is all EL. highly irritating... makes me want to write and just AVOID the contests. I get so very weary of watching the end results.

Ya know that is a fabulous idea... if they could get it to work program wise. Keep all of the ratings of all of the contest stories hidden until the contest is done so that people cannot just go in and low ball the high rated stories.

Last Place? - Oops!

I have just checked my ratings.

All five have over 25 votes and all five are Hs, some by about .01 or .02.

I suspect 5-bombing trolls and friends in the AH.

So I'm not in the running for the Last Place (tm) Contest this time even if I hadn't declared myself ineligible.

When the real contest is declared I will repost the Last Place (tm) Contest rules for those who want the distinction to fight it out by declaring their low ratings.

That is some achievement Og. My entry received five votes overnight, pushing it to 4.78

I don't know if they could do that. The scores are not posted on the Halloween Story index but they are posted on the top lists and the general lists for the different categories. Anybody who wants to find out how any paeticular person is doing can go there to check. They can actually get the standings but it is a rather slow and laborious process, involving going to each of the top lists to search for Halloween entries.

i cant even come close to imagining having that sort of time on my hands...certainly, i wouldnt spend it on this kind of calculation.

Congratulations RG,Rumply and Penelope Street!

Og will be along soon to post the last place rules, but with a 4.66 I'm not going to be winning that one either *laughs*

Congratulations to RG, Rumps and Penny.

My story, "The last Piece of Ass" received 50 votes and had a final score of 4.34. That probably won't be anywhere near low enough to win the last place title.

Last Place (tm) Contest - Halloween

Rules for Last Place contest.
****

Order for coming last:

Lowest voted rating for a genuine attempt at a story multiplied by number of votes if less than 25 divided by 25.

So - if rating is 3.00 but only 12 votes the score would be

3.00 x 12 / 25 = 1.44

If rating is 3.00 but more than 25 votes, the rating stays the same.

I suggest ignoring number of reads except as a tie breaker when least number of reads would *win*.
****

Since the 'winner' actually wins nothing, it is pointless to cheat. To enter, all you have to do is declare your rating and votes at the time the real contest is decided.

Participation is entirely voluntary.

Og is banned from entry for life because he finds coming last too easy and is a past multiple winner of last places.

For the last place contest, 1 votes are very valuable and 5s are bombs.

Og (whose decision is final unless you all gang up on me)

Just for the record...

My five entries mysteriously all ended up with Hs.

A Year and A Day Rated 4.58 Votes 26
Birth and Death Rated 4.77 Votes 31
Fifteen times Fifty Rated 4.87 Votes 39
Not English Rated 4.58 Votes 33 (and more PCs than I have ever had)
Witches on Gallows Field Rated 4.54 Votes 26

So recent 5-bombers kept me unusually far from the last place.

Mea Culpa, Og! I'm sorry, but I liked them. You've simply got to add more "Wake up, sleepyheads!" if you want to earn the coveted 3.

Congrats, Rob, Rump and Penny!! WOOHOOOOOOO!!!

My story ended up with a 4.79 and I think 67 votes and over 4700 reads.

So, where's the party?

I think that is possibly the trouble with all the potential contenders for the last place. There were too many good but perhaps 'ordinary' good stories in the contest. It makes the winners' achievement in the main competition that much more significant this time. Well done.

Over at Abs.

I'm already two sheets to the wind. :D

I think my halloween story wound up firmly in the mediocre range: 4.54, with 48 votes, and right at 6800 views.

Nothing to be ashamed of, for sure, but not my best showing, either. ;)

Mine ended up with a 4.62 with 53 votes and 3511 views. Good, but not as good as I had hoped, lol.

Well, I'll be sheep dipped.

That must have been one mother of a sweep last night. I lost about six votes and picked up .10.

I want to thank all the little people at AH who helped me get where I am today--bleery eyed, dyspeptic, very happy, but most of all, incredulous.

So -so, but the fun is in the freindships and the encouragement we all give each other :)

This is resembling the Olympics.

Everybody is extraordinarily good, so a .08 difference is the distance between the winner and the middle of the pack.

We all did well.

I'd like to pull a Dodo now, "everyone has won and all must have prizes!"

4.79 with 57 votes

Last night I lost 3 votes....

didn't do anything to my score

Congrats to Rob and Rumpy

I don't understand how the scoring went.... but I am not sure that I am willing to care right now either

*hobbles off quietly*

Elizabetht, as I mentioned last night, strange things can happen in the last week of a contest. During the Earth Day contest, DP and I tracked the scores like a couple of IRS guys going after Capone. But the final scoring came as a total shock. Winning is so fluky and it can't help but be a let-down when you've had a good score the entire contest yet finish out of the money.

The good news is you're among VERY good company. At three last night, I thought Colly and Shang would finish second and third. To be an "also-ran" among writers of that caliber says a lot about your ability.

Hang in there.
