Halloween Rant

Are there any larger towns nearby?

I know I live in a city that has several malls where the stores participate and it is safe and well lit. There are no costume police, either. I am a Christian and have been very self-righteous in the past, but I finally got over it after living with a son who abused drugs and two divorces.

I talked to my next door neighbor and she told me about a few of the neighborhoods that are kid friendly for trick or treating. So I think we'll do that. I just don't want to be part of a substitute Halloween party. The whole point of Halloween is to have fun and dress up and be silly or scary or whatever. I can't mess that up for my kids. If we have to, we'll drive the 40 minutes to Joplin to go the mall, but I think we should be able to go around the neighborhoods here.

Thanks for all the feedback.

trick or treating

well, there's lots and lots of churches surrounding me w/ all of their replacement halloween thingys going on... and obviously lots of people that are more than happy to attend and encourage others to attend them as well....

and a good many "we don't celebrate halloween" or "we don't celebrate pagan holidays" folks around here too...

but... I've found there is plenty of trick or treaters and homes to trick or treat at too.

Joplin, MO? Yikes...if that's the nearest mall, you ARE in a scary place! *hugs*

Lol! I am in Oklahoma but very close to the border of the four states (OK, MO, AR, KS for those who don't know what the hell I'm talking about). Joplin, I think, is the nearest biggish town though there might be a close one in Arkansas but I don't know yet.

Okay so I'm living in a new town, and it's a small town, I admit it. And yes I'm in the middle of the Bible belt again. But for fuck's sake...

We bought costumes for the kids (my oldest is going as the devil- lol) and were all ready for trick or treating on Monday night, only to hear that very few people actually trick or treat in this town. It's a safe town, no reason for poison worries or whatever. It's that the churches do big functions instead, so people just don't go door to door.
Which would be fine. Except the biggest Halloween thing sponsored by area churches advertises that it's for 3-12 year olds (I have a two year old with an adorable fairy costume!) and they shouldn't be wearing "scary or evil" costumes.

WTF????

So I'm not sure what to do. The kids are all psyched for trick or treating. Do I have my oldest get a new costume and go to this thing? Do we try to trick or treat anyway? Obviously we didn't realize all this was going to be a difficulty when we bought the costumes.

Thoughts?

One option is to go to another town that's less stuffy.

the other I see is just take em trick or treating. It's all about the fun of course and the candy, so pick up some big bags of candy. If their haul is less than they exxpected, you can fill their jack o lanters. If there aren't many people hom, I suggest having the garfield halloween special on tap. Just kick back with them, watch garfield & eat candy. Once the sugar high kicks, they'll have a good time, even if the loot was dissappointing :)

You would be much happier in San Francisco. There, EVERYBODY goes out in costume. And not just for Halloween, but much of the last two weeks of October.

In San Francisco, they're out in costume year round.

I'm thinking you should do the church thing and dress them up as Jim Baker and Tammy-Faye. *nods* That's really scary stuff.

Jesus loves Halloween.
because the bible tells me so.

we were invited to a church 'fall festival' and the kids were to wear 'vegetable or fruit related costumes'
this was several years ago when we lived in virginia. how about a big...NO THANK YOU.
however, i did make an awesome costume for eldest. she was a ham and swiss sandwich, her face painted green with a toothpick coming out of her hair like an olive. she won best costume at the mills mall. *grin* so there!

tons of bible thumping going on here too. i just smile and say..."we're not affliated but thank you for your invite."

Well this year, my youngest is going as a dead bride, and actually pretty evil looking, my son, well he is going as a 14 yr old in a mask!
There were some awesome costumes on GMA and the View the other day to think about for next year.

Our town hasnt deleted trick or treating yet, we walk up to the 'rich' part of town and get stuff other than candies but of course we take the candy too! lol
They hand out dollar store pencils, erasers, cans of pop etc. One dentist lives along there and they get a pack of sugar free gum, or a toothbrush.

On our way is the fire department, we check out their haunted house, and Mom gets to check out their treats! lmao Last year they got a call just as my son jumped out of the firetruck.

Id check the fire halls, that way kids and mom have a fun night out.

I graduated from high school in Broken Arrow!
We live up near Grand Lake now.

Relating to nothing:

Who else is gonna bring you a broken arrow
Who else is gonna bring you a bottle of rain
There he goes moving across the water
There he goes turning my whole world around

Just :heart:ing, SJ. ;)

So I guess my town isn't so bad. The kiddos were allowed to wear their costumes to school today (even scary ones). Dropping off my oldest, I got to see the cutest costumes inclduing the very best Corpse Bride ever. She was probably about six, stick thin (very appropriate) with the greatest hair and makeup. My faith in humanity has been restored now. ;)
